New to SketchUp Campus 2024

Hi Everyone! I am new to SketchUp. I have completed Sketchup Fundamentals as well as Fundamentals Practice Playground.

I feel the need to mention that I am very new to computer technology in general (aside from the occasional endless social media scrolling/ work emails). I am confused about where to take my newly learned basic skills with-in the Sketchup Campus Courses.

Did anyone ever figure out a well-ordered flow to take themselves from Beginner to Intermediate with in SU Campus that they would be willing to share?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome.

Admittedly my transition from beginner to intermediate was many years ago but the thing I’ve found the most useful is to practice. And practice. And practice. Model things around you. Not everything you model has to be in whatever field you’re interested in. As far as learning to work efficiently in SketchUp you just need to do it. As you go along be open to modeling things more than once. Even now after 21 years of using SketchUp I sometimes of a better way to model something after I’ve modeled it once. I’ll model it again to see. And then practice some more.

Thank you for your help! That is very insightful. Just to clarify, would you even suggest that I continue on to other Campus courses being that I am a beginner? Are you suggesting that creating my own models utilizing the skills that I have acquired from the Fundamentals course would be even more beneficial at this point?

I would suggest both. Some of the Campus stuff, like working in LayOut might mean more after you’ve created your own models for a little bit but at some point I expect you’ll want to go through most if not all of the offerings there.

How is it that you’ll be using SketchUp? What kinds of things were you thinking of modeling when you decided to start using it?

FWIW, my primary use for SketchUp is for woodworking projects. I originally got interested in SketchUp in 2002 because I wanted to use it to design projects for my own woodworking. That has grown into doing commercial work for a variety of clients. I’ve also found it interesting and educational to model machines and hardware and other stuff. If you want to see examples look at the link in my forum profile. The point is that there’s stuff to be learned in creating models of all kinds of objects and the key is to just create models.
