New eLearning: Mastering SketchUp Solid Tools

Hey SketchUp Community!

Take control of complex 3D geometry by mastering the logic of digital joinery. We’ve just added the SketchUp Solid Tools course to Trimble Learn’s SketchUp Campus to help you efficiently combine, cut, and modify your models.

Solve Your Complex Modeling Challenges

Whether you are designing intricate architectural details, developing products, or preparing models for 3D printing, the Solid Tools suite is your secret weapon. This course moves past basic pushing and pulling, teaching you the exact mechanics of boolean operations—adding, subtracting, and intersecting shapes with perfect precision.

You will also learn the critical technical differences between tools that seem similar on the surface, and how selection order changes your results.

:graduation_cap: What the Course Covers:

In about 1.5 hours, you will develop a complete workflow for solid geometry:

  • The Anatomy of a Solid: Understand exactly what qualifies as a “solid” in SketchUp and why it matters.

  • Combining Shapes: Learn when to use Union versus Outer Shell to clean up internal geometry.

  • Cutting & Intersecting: Master Subtract, Trim, and Intersect to precisely carve holes, create custom joinery, or extract unique overlapping forms.

  • Splitting Solids: Use the Split tool to divide overlapping objects while keeping all the resulting pieces.

  • Troubleshooting: Learn to diagnose and fix broken solids using the Entity Info panel and the Solid Inspector extension.

:light_bulb: Why take this course?

Trying to manually intersect faces and erase stray lines to create complex shapes is a major time sink. Learning the native Solid Tools workflow ensures your geometry stays clean, water-tight, and ready for whatever your project demands next.

Happy modeling!
