However, the ‘preferences’ links through to the existing skm files, just full of saved content. I tried saving content of ‘open a file’ to materials, but when I open it, there is no content.
Is there a technical resolution available. I saw there were previous posts, but I can’t find them now.

Pay attention to what it is you’re supposed to be selecting. You aren’t meant to see the .skm files. You are selecting a folder as the button is labeled.
If the folder you select contains .skm files, when you press Select Folder those files will show in the Materials panel as thumbnails or a list.
There is no technical problem here.
Dave,
I appreciate your courtesy in speaking to my issue. The skm files were mentioned to me in other replies, so I focused therein.
So, I do have .jpg files for wallpaper, for instance. I save jpg files through files explorer. When I select the button you show above, i get a dropdown ‘open or create’ the explorer opens, the file is there, but the materials are not. Is there any reading material you can point me to?

You need to import the .jpg images into SketchUp as materials and then save them to a collection. .jpg files will not just show up in the Materials panel.
When I import images to use as textures I draw rectangles that are the size of the area I want the texture to cover. Then I use File>Import and import the image making sure I selected Use Image as Texture and apply it to a face.
Once the images have been imported and are textures, you can save the textures as a collection and shown previously and in your other thread.
Dave,
The thank you message was meant for Riches, but I guess the communication is coming to you. Thank you also.
After watching Justin’s you tube training]
I surmised that I didn’t import an individual material into sketchup model, but simply saved it in Win 11 Explorer file. Do I need to import then perform the ‘save as’ and ‘replace material’ procedures?
However, I unwittingly downloaded dunn edwards paint into the materials section of default tray. I do not need to open a favorite explorer file at all or to any exterior file (not that I wanted to, just something worked.)
Also, in the instructional you-tube, the file pathway address from ‘favorites’ tab in default try, leads to an external drive, and not to user>xxxx>App>Roaming. The pathway address instead includes “no map.” You’ll see it in the video. Could the app roaming address configured by MS 11 (i.e. ms coded for all downloads to go to onedrive or roaming), interfere with the SU encoded pathway?
I have a lot of material in the skm files in Windows Explorer, and that file does not open from sketchup default tray. Period. Any suggestions?
Right. Thank you, I just watched that video. So I must be thrifty in my materials selection. I just can’t connect to the file, and select the material.
Thank you.
My missed action was right click on the icon that was imported; then, “save as”. Then the entire file (materials)
I missed your direction to right click on the material icon now ‘in your model’ and select save as. Then, opening or create a file, then select the file folder in explorer where I saved it eg materials even though the file folder shows no content. The reason it doesn’t show content is because it opened in the default tray, and the entire content appears in the default tray.
So, that’s done. Thank you.
Did I do this wrong? I saved downloaded 3d warehouse as “components” but in this case, not as texture.
Components: I applied fabric edits to furniture uploaded from 3D Warehouse. The first link below is that file: Can you help me understand this so I can save my edited component.
I saved each component as, well components. Then I pulled the items into another working file. The furniture, whether edited or not, delivers a ….well, don’t know what to call it. Link 2 below is that file.
