I’ve tried copy/pasting from other viewports, and the pulldown scene menu doesn’t display a newly created scene from Sketchup, even after updating the scene and saving in Sketchup. I’ve also tried importing the Sketchup model again, quitting and restarting both programs…same problem. The only way that I can successfully get the new scene is by creating a new Layout page and importing the model into it, then copy/pasting that into the working Layout page.

You may not be referencing the correct SketchUp file. Double check in Document Setup > References.
Share the LO file and the SKP here for us to take a look.
Share the LO file so we can see what you’ve overridden. Most likely you’ve overridden the scene Camera properties. I expect the solution is very simple if we can see your file.
One thing to note. You share the backup LayOut file, not the original.
Which viewport isn’t showing the scene you want to show? The only override in the viewports in this file are style related.
The viewport in the lower left corner uses the Last saved SketchUp view instead of an actual scene. That’s not good because every time you move the camera in the SketchUp file and update the reference the viewport will change.
Copying and pasting from one LO file to another in LO2021 can create issues with references. You will wind up with a different .skp reference for each pasted viewport in that case which means you have different models for different viewports. That has been changed in recent versions of LO so you don’t wind up with multiple references. I’m using LO2026 which fixes multiple identical references automatically.
Maybe you can show the references list in Document Setup?
It was the viewport in the bottom left that wouldn’t load. It didn’t even show that scene in the list of scene options. When I choose 'last saved, it loaded something different.
Here is the original sketchup file. Note that I was ultimately able to load all scenes, only by creating a new layout document, which allowed me to load the problematic scene into a new viewport, and then I copy/pasted in the contents of the older Layout doc.
From what I’ve been reading over the years, copy/pasteing is the best way to create additional viewports. This allows me to retain scale, line weight, etc. in all the viewports. Has this changed?

By the way, this has been a chronic problem for a number of years. I would eventually get success (sometimes) by waiting it out (eventually Layout would recognize the scene), or just creating a brand new document. Is this all being caused by user error? I have a brand new Mac studio with 36 GB of memory and 2 TB of storage.

I rarely do this, but I do duplicate the page with lots of success.
I believe there is an issue with copy / paste that if it exceeds a certain size it will become a static image and not linked to you model.
Probably yes to the first part. I have an M2 Studio with lesser specs and work on far more complicated models and and don’t see 90% of the issues others seem to have.

When you choose Last saved SketchUp view for the scene it will display the model as it was displayed when you last saved it. That may not be a view shown in any of the scenes. It’s showing what it says.
Copying and pasting viewports within the same LO document is good. I was addressing copying from one LO document and pasting in another.
ETA: Mike’s comment about copying viewports for very large SketchUp models is on point.
It may be that your computer is slow to update the viewport because you have the render type set to Hybrid. Changing to Raster would make the updates faster. Rendering speed has improved since 2021 so you would likely see an improvement if you were to get current with SketchUp and LayOut.
I’ve had that a couple of times recently.
