Layout link to cloud model

I am using a Mac, I cant find where to link my layout scenes to the most up to date trimble connect model. Can anyone help?

Best practice would be to download the SketchUp file from your Trimble Connect storage to the project folder on the internal drive on your computer and then use Relink in Document Setup>References. If you’ve updated to SketchUp 2026 look for Document Setup in the Window menu instead of File.

Also, if you have updated to a newer version than 2023, please update your forum profile.

Updated, thanks for the heads up!
There is no way to direct link to the Trimble Connect model? This is very unstable since we have a multi-user firm. We can’t have 2 models floating around, especially if there were a mishap and someone was editing the trimble connect version and not saving the model that is connected to layout.

The trouble becomes when you save to the cloud, the cmd+s shortcut for saving is overwritten to the cloud model. Its very easy to think you’re saving locally.

This poses a pretty serious problem for larger firms.

At this point, I don’t see that there’s a way to do that.

Having your reference saved in the cloud makes your LO file more unstable and prone to corruption. We’ve seen plenty of cases where users have used SketchUp files saved to cloud locations such as iCloud or DropBox in which the files have been fatally corrupted.

When a user opens a SketchUp file from Trimble Connect it first gets downloaded to the users computer which helps to prevent the corruption.

Agreed. There is a toolbar icon that shows where the SketchUp file is saved but the users have to be trained to pay attention to that. When working on a SketchUp file that is saved to Trimble Connect, my practice is touse Save as … to save the file locally with periodic saves to Trimble Connect to create incremental backups and before quitting work on it I do a save both locally and to Trimble Connect.

I wouldn’t have a problem with the cloud saving if it simply did not become the target of our saving shortcut. I can train pretty much anything else. I don’t trust interns to saving as / paying attention to shortcut saves.

If this was fixed, I’d be more comfortable using the cloud service. Right now, our local model is king and the client models can lag behind. (I would think this is the case of any residential architecture firm)

I think the key to that is more stable, faster connections to the cloud. Even if you think you have a fast connection, it may not be fast enough all the time. Depends on how many users are accessing the network and things that are outside of LayOut’s conmtrol.

Maybe train the users to save locally and to then save to Trimble Connect. I’ve wondered if an extension could be written to save to both locations with a single click.

You’re on a Mac, yes? I use an app called ChronoSync that I use for backups and downloading files from camera and audio memory cards, but it does more that I’m not fully up on. It’s ability to sync files and folders not just locally, but over a network and, I think, cloud services might be promising for multi-user file collaboration, but I haven’t mastered the network/cloud possibilities of it. Might be worth a look. A sync can be one way only so the source doesn’t get changed.
