Layout files for large project suddenly won't open

hello i have a large skp file and an equally large layout file that i cannot get to open (the layout files). I have several backups of the file which wont open either. i am on a mac and beside myself with what to do about it. i have looked through the forums but frankly not understanding half of the solutions… is there anything i can do or am i out of luck and have to re-draw everything??

Help us help you. Share the LayOut file to see if we can do something with it or figure out what has gone wrong. Upload the file to DropBox and share the link.

king of kings! thanks for taking a look. incidentally i have a backup on my onedrive from august and that wont open either

The file is corrupted indieed. In what version of LayOut did you start this file in? It shows the effects of a bug from an older version. There are more than 38,000 .style files. I show most but not all of them selected here.

I don’t know if he can do anything with it but perhaps @adam would have a chance to look. He might have some tools I don’t have.

BTW, I looked at your SketchUp file and noticed incorrect tag usage. This wouldn’t create the problem you are seeing with the LayOut file but you should address that. ALL edges and faces should be created and remain untagged.

started in sketchup 2025, updated this morning because i thought maybe it was a glitch that a refresh would help out. i have older versions of the layout file that wont open too. i can load into the dropbox if that helps? none of them will open.

“ALL edges and faces should be created and remain untagged.” can you explain this a little more? I usually only tag something that is grouped and leave the ‘guts’ untagged. once in a while i will tag a line if i want it to go away in the demo version of the model, but otherwise i am not really following what you mean…

I exepct I would see the same issue. Let’s wait to see if Adam has a chance to look at your file.

This is the way you should be working. It might be that you imported something with incorrect tag usage.

I would suggest not doing that because it can create issues. Put the edge(s) in a group or groups and tag them.

ok thank you - will wait for more. in the mean time i loaded in a layout version that i can still see the preview instead of a blank page

Strangely, now not even my blank templates will open in Layout. Do you think there could be something wring with my Layout app?

Could be. How old is your template?

february of 2025

Can you open any LayOut files or any of the shipped templates?

Share your template file. Maybe there’s something screwy with it.

yes plain paper template will open

That file does appear to be corrupted. I won’der if @adam can see what is causing that. In the mean time you might consider making a new template to replace this one.

Are you using the SketchUp model embedded in your template as a proxy? If so, you could clean up the model before adding it to your LO template. I found this:

Fixed incorrect tag usage.

Purged unused.

Reduced large materials.

That reduced the file size by more than half.

okay… strange that layout files that i havent opened in months and months now won’t open. is there a way to reset the app’s preferences or anything that might give it a fresh start? i see some ointernet suggestions of deleting plist etc ad willing to try anything! there are lots of things i need to rebuild

There are issues that can happen that deleting the plist or other files can solve but I don’t think that will help in this case. I’m not having any problems opening my LO files in LO2026 but I can’t open yours. If it was related to the plist I ought to be able to open it on my PC since I don’t have the same file you do.

yes i think i did try a little 3d model to use as a template for how drawings should look, though ironically i was intending to delete that for my next template version. how are you able to get anything to open that all to see that screenshot? that is ony the sketchup file you are oprning, correct? i do use material resizer pretty regularly, but i am the only one in the office that tends to file optimization so sometimes files grow while unattended

The LO file is technically a ZIP file. I opened it with 7zip and extracted the .skp file out of it.

Yes. It’s the only one in the LO file. If you do insert it and plan to delete it, remember to purge the unused file from LO before saving it.

It’s hard to get everyone to keep models clean isn’t it?

oh fancy, i see the quote option now. so layout holds on to sketchup file that it has previously linked unless you purge? how does one purge that?
