Layout files for large project suddenly won't open

for reals

also, is there an extension to help me correct/clean up all that tagging nonsense?

The LayOut file contains a “ref” folder that contains a copy of each reference file used in the project. You can see those references in Document Setup>References.

As with components and materials in SketchUp, deleting the thing (viewports, images, spreadsheets, etc.) from the pages doesn’t remove it from the LO file. You purge by clicking the Purge button at the bottom of the References panel

I use Default Tag Geometry by TIG (available from Sketchucation) because it gives the report I showed. CleanUp3 from the Extension Warehouse can also do this.

okay so strangely enough i was able to open the document in layout 2025 and?

so maybe you can help me here because i managed to get one copy to open by using sketchup 2025 and removed most of the pages so that i could just edit my stupid electrical drawings - and after purging it refuses to let me save - i get the spinning rainbow of death over and over

The file you shared opened fine for me in LO 2026. I similar issues with overridden Camera properties and incorrect tag usage in the the SketchUp model but otherwise it seems OK.

Where is the file being saved when you try saving it?

locally to my mac

regarding the camera properties - i am seeing that it is best practice to NOT change any tags/views from layout but rather set it all up in sketchup ? is that correct? i have been trying to set up one plan view and then toggle what i want to see off and on in layout but pwerhaps that is not the best?

Did you change the file name before saving it?

Making adjustments to visible tags and their dash styles in LO is very powerful. Modifying the Camera position in the viewport can create a load of additional work for you which is why I advise setting up scenes in the model for the views you need and not changing the camera in LO.

If you mean toggling tags on or off, this is a good thing. You can likely use the same scene for multiple viewports that way. Avoid double clicking into the viewport and don’t manually interact with the Standard Views list or the Ortho tick box, though.

Yes and give it a new name.

This template appears to have a table in it. We had a recent regression in the 2026.1 release where some tables have an invalid reference to a non-existent file that is causing the LayOut document to fail to open. We have found and fixed the issue internally for the next release. In the mean time, you should be able to open the file in an older version of LayOut (2026.0, 2025, etc), then context click on the table and select “Unlink Table Viewport”. You may also want to purge the reference in the file references section of Document Setup.

still spinning. and still refusing to be anything other than 319 MB

i did notice that the table for my page numbers seemed to be causing the issue in my template so i removed that and was able to keep most of the tempate in tact. however now i am having trouble purging and saving…
