Layout Feature Requests: Update Locked Model Reference & Color By Layer

It would be really helpful if you could update a locked reference in Layout. I lock them when dimensioning and labeling to prevent accidentally moving or deleting a reference.

I would also like to see the option to color by layer in layout for the purpose of quickly seeing which layer an element is on. I always forget to change layers when going between dimensions, text, and hatching.

Until such time as the feature is implemented, if it ever is, make sure your viewports and dimensions are on different layers and lock the viewport layer. The viewports will update even if the layer is locked.

Locking viewports is like locking objects in SketchUp. It prevents any and all changes to the object in SketchUp.

I like this idea. It would certainly be helpful. Currently I will hide the layer for stuff I’m checking and look for anything that remains. For example I turn off my Dimensions layer and look for dimensions that still show so I can move them to the Dimensions layer.

I just realized putting the viewport on its own layer and locking it like you suggested worked. I added a little “update button” viewport off the page linked to the model that I can quickly right click on without having to unlock anything. Seems to be what I needed!

Also, if you stack viewports, which I do frequently, put each viewport on its own layer. That way, if you have some reason to access a viewport lower in the stack, you can hide the upper layers temporarily. I often need to dimension to viewports lower in the stack so hiding the upper viewport layers is important.
