Layout exporting weird

UPDATE: I downloaded the font Montserrat and believe I need to embed the font when exporting the document to a PDF from Layout 2023. I think this is what is causing the PDF to export looking ‘off’. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Hello. When I export my document from layout it is out of nowhere showing the lines and text extremely faint…it almost looks like there is a film over it (see attached). I use layout 2023 all the time and have never had this issue before. I’m wondering if I accidentally changed a setting of some sort… TYIA for any advice!

First, I would suggest you remove the PDF from your post. It has client information in it.

Second, it would help if you share the .layout file so we can see your exact setup. Best if you share it privately, though. since it also has client contact info you probably don’t want that to be public. You can click on my name and then Message if you want me to look at it.

Which version of SketchUp/LayOut are you using? SketchUp Pro in your profile on’y tells us about the subscription type but not which version of SketchUp and LayOut.

After some light research I am back and need some help! I think that I need to embed the font (Montserrat) that I downloaded during the export process. I am trying to export it from Layout 2023. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you!

You can’t embed a font into a LayOut file. A PDF can have an embedded font or embedded subset. The PDF exporter the LayOut uses will embed the font. Here’s an example from a PDF I created from LayOut.

The embedded font/embedded subset will make the font appear even though the device it’s being view on doesn’t have the font resident in the system fonts.

If you are sending the LayOut file to someone else to view, they will need to have the font(s) you used in the document installed on their computer so that LayOut can display the text with it. Otherwise it’ll substitute with a different font.

Thank you for this! I uploaded the file I’m working on here (labeled 'test"). The document will export with the font rather than change it all together, but you’ll notice how the text looks faint/milky when it’s opened on a web browser. The font is downloaded on my computer so not sure why this is happening if I’m understanding your explanation correctly?

test.pdf (1.0 MB)

Send me the LO file in a private message.

I guess another question for you would be is, do you think it might be best to let my client know that the pre-set fonts that LayOut has are the best options to choose from to avoid any issues? The documents I’m working with are super lengthy and detailed, so not a quick thing to keep swapping fonts out.

What are you sending to the client? If it’s the PDF, it doesn’t matter if you tell them or not. If you are sending them the LayOut file, they would probably find it useful to know.

FWIW, the Montserrat Thin will display as “milk” simply because the font is so thin. It also looks like you have the color of the dimension text set to gray.

I looked at your PM but it only contains the .pdf, not the .layout file. Will you send the .layout file?

I’m sending the client the PDF but it displays strange so that’s the only reason it would matter bc it is not looking nice when they open it. They need to forward it to print and share via zoom. It looks fine in my adobe but when I view it anywhere else it looks different. What is on the current doc is the regular Montserrat font (I actually tried the bold etc.) however you are correct in that the dimension text is in Gray, other than on the first Page labeled as ‘Page 4’ where it is black. This is from me messing around trying to fix it. Let me know if you can open the attached google doc. of the Layout file. I’m not too computer saavy so please bear with me and thank you for your help!

I can’t download the file. It says Permission Denied. Don’t make it public though. It’s got client stuff in it. Send it in a PM.
