If (SU2024) the next update had only one thing new/fixed about it, what would you want?

The flip around commands still exist, they just are no longer bound to the right-click menu. You can create your own shortcuts to them (just remember you must select something to flip before they are available).

Really nice to know. I will search for him.

I think it would be great if the SU team fixed the bugs that exist in the current 2023 version before or concurrently release 2024. For instance, using the leader tool essentially breaks the UI until exiting the tool, re-initiating it and exiting again. Same for layout - fix the bugs and assume not all of us are going to immediately jump to the new version because there’s a new ā€œ2D text toolā€ (wild guess). Also, from the OP making it so that upgrading to the new version is like upgrading to any ā€œminor releaseā€ where all plugins and tool trays are preserved.

The one feature I would find most beneficial: the ability to attribute a section fill color (or pattern) to a tag. This feature alone would vastly simplify the number of scenes/work required when creating complex floor plans/sections.

Lol. You masochist.

I need to save .SKP files in Sketchup 2016 format to import into VCarve (CAM) software’s importer. It doesn’t handle anything newer.

SU2024 no longer allows you to save in older formats, which is undoubtedly an arm twist to get all users subscribed to the latest version.

However this just caused a major disruption to our workflow and business. We might need to look closer at working in Fusion with its native CAM output abilities and move from SU after all these years.

Leader and dimension lines that break when they cross each other. I’m an old-school/purist when it comes to drafting - those things are supposed to break when they cross…

Option for Windows like one window interface. As the separate windows are very annoying for those using laptop on separate displays.

@dezmo posted a fix that uses the Ruby API in v2024 to save as an older version…

I really don’t like the decision to disable the ability to save to older versions of SketchUp. That just seems overly punitive in my opinion. It is certainly a misstep. Most CAD programs I’ve ever used have allowed for saving to older versions in one form or another. At the very least allow for saving to versions released within the last five years, maybe a compromise would be more agreeable?

What, honestly, is the reasoning behind this decision?

SU 2024 has a few technical issues (and they will get resolved), but first lets fix this self inflicted issue which should have never been an issue in the first place.

Oh I’d bet $$ on it to discourage Make 17 use. Sure there is an official ā€œreasonā€ but I’d keep my bet.

In any case, it won’t change my objective. I’m gradually building my 2D/3D drawing tool, with innovations like a new guide line system this week. Of course the decision to disable the ability to save to older versions is to force adoption of subscription. The problem is that by adopting this principle, they also penalize their customers. For example, from one version to another, there are bugs, saving or continuing in an old version can be beneficial… They also penalize the plug-in ecosystem. Some are no longer compatible.

If I had one thing…
No crashes anymore. With Layout 2024 until now it is nearly impossible to work with my old files,
as it crashes when it comes to updating the references…And I use a lot of templates from SKP 2023,
so 2024 I can’t use well…

Something which hasn’t been said enough is great work and keep it going to the SU development team for releasing an update with meaningful and observable improvements. The years of constant forum whinging (by many of us), have finally been acknowledged and implemented. It’s a great start.

The change of font and slight tweaks to the UI shows they’re also looking at this. Fingers crossed there’s a Dark Mode in the offing…

But if there’s two (equally useful) things I’d like adding to SketchUp they are:

  1. When viewing Color By Tag, the ability to set the Opacity of Objects (faces, edges, Components, Groups, images, and Tag’s as a whole). I model by default using Color By Tag to clearly identify what’s on what Tag, which is logical to me coming from AutoCAD & Rhino. The current inability to individually adjust items to show transparency, and also with adjustable values (i.e not using X-Ray to show everything with a transparency at a preset level), slows the modelling process quite a bit. Surely this would be an easy add-on for the SU team?

It could sit as a radio button option within Styles > Edit > Modelling with transparency levels set from Entity Info for individual items, and Tag transparency set within the main Tag tray for each Tag.

  1. More control over Snaps. Adding-in the ability to:
    • switch object snapping (the overall function) On or Off. Adding it as a switchable on-the-fly option within the main modelling environment set within the UI tray (and not via a cumbersome sub-menu; Window > Preferences/Model Info > OSnaps option), would ensure it didn’t affect existing users workflows. It’s a win-win.
    • select which snaps are currently active (running)
    • temporarily invoke snap overrides withing running commands (for a single selection)

And one thing for LayOut:

  1. Unify SU and LayOut into one single program to allow for a much more cohesive and fluid modelling experience and a smoother, much less clunky, workflow. It’s a no-brainer as all other major (and minor) CAD/Modelling/3D packages have combined Model and Paperspaces.

This does not address all aspects of your request, but, you know you can currently set the opacity of any tag color/texture?

Combining SU and Layout sounds like but of a UI nightmare, and potentially slowing down the operation of both. I appreciate the program separation and the ability to run them simultaneously and don’t find the workflow so ā€œchunkyā€. I understand there are many combined paper space and model space programs but I am not convinced that it is an advantage.

Yep, after I wrote that I thought ā€œI wonder ifā€¦ā€ so I ventured back into modelling. And would you Adam and Eve it, you can set the opacity of a Tag!! Well I never. I’ve been running in modelling Autopilot for so long I couldn’t see the wood from the trees. Every day’s a school day…but would still like the ability to change the opacity of other items, but this goes some way to soothing the frustration.

Cool. I often set specific tag textures to match the texture of the component but with some at 50% transparency. Then in color by tag the model looks the same but with some components transparent. This is a method of achieving selective X-ray mode.

Integrate easy fillet/round-over ability into the native tools without having to use an extension or follow-me. Would help a lot with 3D printing to eliminate sharp edges.

Mostly I just want to see a renewed focus on improving the speed, stability and efficiency of Layout, and sure a built-in fillet/chamfer tool is probably not an unreasonable request.

I would love to see SU finally get sections fills with Colour by Tag, I know Colour by Material is probably trickier and I know how to use Tig’s excellent SectionCutFace as a workaround. For architectural drawings it would be a major productivity boost.
