If (SU2024) the next update had only one thing new/fixed about it, what would you want?

I agree.

Unless someone can confirm otherwise I believe multi tagging in ConDoc is achieved via attributes ( or some other API ability ) and therefore doesn’t work with Layout.

Not sure, I just knew that during my trial it wasn’t going to work for my use case where I just needed it to control object visibility with my own scenes and not need to use it to generate the scrapbook views to detail.

You’re using sketchup for something it isn’t meant to do exactly, and asking for a feature that doesn’t align with any expected capabilities. You should just model the plans and then adjust from there in 3D. Then you just export elevations and everyone wins.

It would be nice to have something that would give a better finished product than what we have currently, which sadly hasn’t been addressed or updated in what, 15-20 years. It’s not unheard of really.

There’s a free rendering engine developed by Trimble, it’s called Trimble connect visualizer, it’s very limited but offers a different finish, I don’t know if it’s better.

If sketchup would incorporate a more complete rendering engine, the price of the software would increase and a lot of people will complain saying that they prefer to use another engine and not pay for one they’re not gonna use. You could try the sketchup studio version, it includes Vray which is one of the most popular rendering engines.

It’s a terrible workflow, you may be using the wrong software, I recommend you to get Qcad Pro, it’s $40 per year and can do what you are doing without using an online program.

I was talking more about just a slightly updated viewport vs a full rendering engine. I, like many others, am already painfully aware of the options and packages available, and how inconvenient and limiting they are, so it isn’t necessary to outline them here.

Currently the best views we can get are edges and textures with basic shadows that don’t really do much. It would be nice to have an incremental upgrade, especially since it hasn’t been improved … ever.

If they could get it to deliver results like Ambient Occlusion Pro then I would agree.

Printing from Layout:
Under file/Page Setup the Size defaults to the same paper size in Document Setup and when you print the size is adjusted to the printer paper size selected for the printer .
For example Document Setup A3 Page Set up defaults to A3 (not A4 as it does now) and when you send to printer and select A4 paper the size is adjusted to fit A4 size paper

No, I’m not. But I’d like to texture extra UV channels inside SU, also when working with 3rd party renderers. And I think this feature (if exposed in the ruby API) could be very interesting for developers as well.

Yeah, I never did drink that Kool-Aid.

…then you could properly call them Tags.

I haven’t had time to try it yet, but I would hope the ConDoc selection can work with saved scenes? Then Layout could get it via scene selection? (@mbrightman?) Don’t want to go off topic, but, yes, what ConDoc is doing is what Tags should be doing.

Layers came from proper 2d CAD and graphic production software where it made sense - things represented on a 2d page were stacked like sheets of trace on a drafting table.

To me - having worked in both of those worlds - layers in SKP made sense only because I knew how they were intended to work.

Tags makes more sense when we think of it as a categorization method, which makes sense when dealing with a 3d space and should be expanded upon.

But really I don’t care what it’s called - I just want it to work better.

Thank you.

Absa-f-ing-lutely !

Just had another thought. Auto-tagging. Not sure if it would be possible, but say I like to follow a certain schema for naming groups/components, it’d be nice if defining the name for that part auto-sorted it into a tag.

IE I have a tag called “Assembly” and any part I name Assembly_xx automatically falls into that tag group.

I’m just lazy and hate having to use the dropdown all the time.

Snaps for Dynamic Components. Actually, just give Dynamic Components some attention period. When’s the last time there was a major update?

I remembered something, it’s a feature that existed in the past but since version 2021 it was removed. It was possible to create new tags from the entity info tray, you could just select one or more objects and type on the tag information and if it didn’t exist it created a new one.

Some people are having a really hard time keeping it to only 1 thing…

@Cyentruk has a plugin to do that with Ifc

Live API in Layout so its shortcomings can be addressed by extension developers…

failing that, components in Layout.
