I can't click into my groups to edit in my 2D floor plan

Hello, I am new to Sketchup and drawing my first 2D
Floor Plan_v5.skp (121.9 KB)
floor plan.

Everything was going well until I imported a continuation line file to add to the top of the stairs. When I tried to edit the stairs to include dotted lines above the continuation line I found I could not edit the stairs group.

I checked all the groups and I can’t double click into any of the groups to edit. I undid the file import hoping I could go back to to model version when groups were editable, but the model is still frozen.

What do I need to change so I can edit the groups in the model?

Many thanks.

Your model doesn’t include any stair group.

Try setting the camera to Perspective and orbit the camera so you are looking at the model obliquely. The try. Where are you clicking to open a group? In your model the Floor tag is turned off so clicking where a floor should be is clicking in empty space.

If you work in Perspective and with the camera at an angle you can identify where faces are and aren’t.

Is this for an online class?

Hi Dave, you are a champion, thank you. I can edit my groups now. Do you know how I would have frozen it in the first place? I tend to go back an undo work I have done rather than deleting and starting again. Would this cause Sketchup to become a bit glitchy? What would you recommend as best practise?

I didn’t realise I had to save the file before attaching it to this chat, I assumed it autosaved. Something else learnt! I promise there are stairs.

It is for the Advanced Sketchup course through Interior Design Institute. I went to the tutor first but we are not able to attach our files so it make it hard to problem solve.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Chelsea,

Thank you.

It could be that something got hung up in your process but it’s hard to say at this point. Undoing work you’ve done shouldn’t normally be a problem however it might not always be best practice since you might want to undo something a few steps back without undoing the more recent steps.

SketchUp does do autosaves but you would need to manually save in order to update the .skp file to the latest state of the model.
