Help! My dimensions in layout are overlapping when there are small measurements close to each other. Is there a setting to change this? So they are all readable and spaced nicely?
You can add leaders to the dimensions (there’s a setting for that in the Dimension Style panel) or edit the dimensions and move the text box to somewhere else. Here are a couple of quick examples. The top 1-1/2 in. dimension has a curved leader. For the other, I moved the text box to the end of the dimension. Note that in this case I didn’t dimension every joist or bay between them. Adding ‘typ.’ obviates the need for that.
You could also add an addition level for the very short dimensions so you have more room for their text.
Or maybe you don’t need some of those very short dimensions and could omit them. Make sure you don’t create conflicting dimensions in your drawings.
Curious: Where are you that a 4 inch thick wall between garage and house would meet codes?
What you’re dealing with is a hard limitation of how much information can be displayed on a given area of paper. Knowing what to dimension and call out on a drawing at a given scale is more art than science.
I would suggest measuring to only one side of your walls when stringing dimensions in plans of this scale. You can use a wall type schedule to call out width of framing. Framers don’t need to know how thick the wall is, only whether it is a 2x4 or 2x6 and which side to pull their measurements from. For the same reason it usually makes more sense to dimension to face of framing instead of face of finish.
Okay thanks!
This is not a real plan, and I don’t know what follows code and what doesn’t. I’m only in the beginning stages of learning sketchup. Maybe ask the people who created the interior design institute advanced sketchup module course? I’m just following their online course and floor plan
