Not being an Apple guy, I am wondering why in library view that an opacity slider is even shown? Shouldn’t it only be visible (or selectable) in Edit mode?

Likely because its part of the system color picker… and if I have colors saved to the pallet below I can happily adjust as needed without doing much else.

Okay, but I would argue that if a material from the library was selected, that the opacity slider should be grayed out, unselectable, and perhaps a tooltip should inform the user they need to add it to the “In Model” materials. (If this cannot be done with the system picker dialog, then it is one more reason to code a custom inspector panel that can work better with SketchUp’s workflow.)

I’m not arguing… it is the way it is.

There’s a lot more than that about the materials editor on Mac that could have been done better. It seems that way back when the devs took the, in retrospect ill-advised, path of adapting the macOS color picker rather than writing a new one.

Wow. If you guys don’t like the color panel, I’m going to hate what you have to say about the font panel. :exploding_head:

ps - transparent text doesn’t appear to work on Mac LayOut (Opacity slider is disabled on SketchUp), so add that to your list.

actually, the font panel is fine. for two reasons :

  • it is untouched by sketchup.
  • it’s exactly the same as any other font panel in macos.

yeah ok, reason 2 comes from reason 1 I guess

I like the freedom when picking colours, and since I use mostly colours, I like that part. but it’s not collapsible like the other panels. and you can’t resize it as well as the others. and the weird bottom edit part instead of a different tab. and the slider thing that we’re mentioning in this thread. and the fact that if someone at apple’s HQ makes a typo in their code, then ALL our material panels start crashing for a month.

really, take the PC material panel, add the various colour pickers the mac has (especially the photo one) and you’ll get a good panel !
(basically Layout’s colour panel is great)

Meh - we mess with the Font panel a little: 3D Text is different, some little things.
Look at the subpanels for 3D Text font panel -

Other apps will show some of that if you make the font panel very narrow and then click on >> to the left of the Search text, but we don’t give the option for those menu items in the toolbar even when you widen it.

And more so in LayOut: alignment on text boxes, for example. We use alignment & justification, anchor (top, middle, bottom), and bounded/unbounded settings.

I’m just glad Mac builds OS things that many apps use, and allows developers to focus on more creative things. I’ve sometimes wished SketchUp had a mode where you grab a color swatch into a text field and it displays RGB values of the color (another Mac app I used did this).
