There’s a way, and that can greatly reduce strain on modeling speed in sketchup, and working with Layout. Say you have a large steel model from your engineer containing nuts and bolts and lots of geometry you dont want, then getting to turn those tags off is invaluable to work speed.
The trick is to import the ifc in a workflow oriented architectural modeller like Vectorworks, and make a 3D dwg from there. The ifc contains tag (layer) structure, only sketchup ignores it, but the dwg import into sketchup will give you those.
Some day in the future we might have instances of dwg and ifc imports on a list in sketchup, and an update button next to each item …
