Updated to Fredosketch 1.7a and I get the crash as outlined in the title.
I guess installing the latest Fredo library will solve it, so this is just for Fredo’s information.
Aside
Please don’t tell me that I should be installing Fredo’s extension via the Sketchucation extension (if that’s still a thing) – I just want to install and go natively from within SketchUp.
I’m curious why you don’t want to use the ExtensionStore tool. You have to have the current version of the Sketchucation ExtensionStore to manage the licenses for Fredo’s extensions. If you use it to install the extensions it will alert you when there are updates available and you can install the updates in one step. Since Fredo makes frequent updates to his extensions the Sketchucation ExtensionStore makes it easy to keep them up to daye. It also generates a “bundle” of extensions from Sketchucation so if you need to install SketchUp on another computer or you update to the next SketchUp version, it will install the most current versions of the extensions from Sketchucation rather than just copying the old ones from the previous release.
If you had used the Sketchucation ExtensionStore to install both LibFredo6 and FredoSketch, you wouldn’t be seeing the message about requiring LibFredo >= 15.6. Both of them would be up to date.
I like the SketchUcation ExtensionStore tool. My biggest gripe is for some overlapping extensions, like, say, Solid Tools, if I got it from Extension Warehouse, it claims it needs updating even if it’s current.
Actually, I don’t have the Sketchucation extension installed – but I did once – and didn’t really like the idea of having it on my system to be honest.
I’m not entirely sure how I was using Fredosketch before – was it “free” at some point?
Anyway, whatever happened, I wasn’t able to use it anymore and because I hadn’t fully got used to it, I didn’t purchase it.
Today I revisited some of Fredo’s extensions and decided to give Fredosketch another go.
Which is when I encountered the crash.
In any case, if I decide that it is useful to me I will have to purchase it after this latest version trial which will mean that I will have to install Sketchucation…
Yes. Very often when Fredo updates an extension there’s also an update to LibFredo6 so updating that is also required. He puts that information in the extension’s first thread post when he releases the update.
It might be that the dot was missing in the message but it’s kind of moot now. There’ve been more than a dozen update releases for LibFredo6 since 15.6 was released.
The crash had to do with not having the required LibFredo6 installed. The Sketchucation ExtensionStore is required for licenses management.
If you had been using the Sketchucation ExtensionStore to install Fredo’s extensions, though, you could have automaticallly updated LibFredo6 at the same time as you updated FredoSketch and you’d never have seen the message about updating LibFredo6.
What is the real objection to the Sketchucation ExtensionStore?
As the principal developer of the SketchUcation toolset - which includes the ExtensionStore - I am obviously biased…
Installing it does nothing except add a submenu and toolbar. Its licensing tools are only needed if you have licensed extensions like Fredo’s. The toolbar has buttons to open the ExtensionStore dialog, Manage Plugins dialog, and open the Extension Manager. We deprecated the SCF Extension Manager because SketchUp caught up with us with their newer Extension Manager and our other tools are accessible by other ways. The Plugins manager lets you load/unload/load-per-session your plugins - even those plugins which are not written as ‘extensions’ - it also offers ‘sets’ of plugins if you have a workflow where different types of plugins are useful but others would only clutter up your menus etc… The ExtensionStore evolved from our forum based PluginStore [it shares the full content] - it allows you to auto-install a selected extension - sidestepping the downloading of its RBZ and then manually installing it with the Extension Manager. Our PluginStore predates the Extension-Warehouse. The ExtensionStore also offers optional auto-reminders of update-availability for your installed extensions, the batch installation of ‘bundles’ of extensions from one SketchUp version to another etc. The toolset Extensions menu also includes tools to open your Plugins and Templates folder without having to search hidden folder paths, list all of your shortcuts, and of course various SCF license management tools.
You don’t have to ‘use’ any of these, but if you have any licensed extensions you do need the licensing tools to check and manage them…
