Works for me, but let me reiterate - only do the voice over if it adds to the content!
Hi Dave,
thanks for the information.
I was unable to find the plugin on sketchup extensions directory and so did a google search instead.
I am a little pissed at that plugin developer you mentioned TIG.
He says on his website that its ātotally freeāā¦this is a total lie. they want my paypal details and payment to setup an account.
I wont be using that unethical websiteā¦either its free or its not. Being deceiptful in this manner is bloody wrong!
Hold on! Actually thatās not true at all. You can join Sketchucation at no charge. Just scroll down a bit and click on the appropriate button. It costs a lot of money to keep a site like Sketchucation running. They donāt run on air. They would appreciate folks joining with a premium membership so they can limit the advertising. There are perks for premium members but they donāt require members to pay.
Itās your loss.
There is nothing deceitful or unethical about Sketchucation.
And it isnāt TIGās website either so thereās no reason to be pissed at him.
There are more than 449.882 members and most of them use the free membership, if you are searching for help regarding SketchUp, you hardly get it without these two forums (forums.sketchup and SketchUcation) ā¦
Just a little perspective and history here: The Sketchucation forum (SCF for short) is by far the oldest, largest and most comprehensive SketchUp community anywhere on the Net. It is not TIGās site, nor it is some rip-off satellite site, hovering around on the outskirts of the SU world. It is the de facto resource for the SketchUp communityā¦dwarfing this or any other forum.
Sketchucation gained the traction it did after the Google buy-out of SketchUp a decade ago. Google made such a pigs ear of the support forum (insisting on shoe-horning it into their visually atrocious Google Groups setup) that nobody of any consequence actually used it. All the hardcore users and developers signed on at Sketchucation.
I believe this forum has about 16,500 members; Sketchucation has close on half a million. As far as plugins go, Its PluginStore facility is the precursor of Trimbleās own Extension Warehouseā¦and dwarfs that too. I wouldnāt be at all surprised to find that Sketchucation hosts an order of magnitude more plugins than the Trimble itself.
Many of the top SU users and developers havenāt even bothered to appear over on this forum at all, being perfectly happy over at Sketchucation. I joined over here only a few weeks agoā¦after a decade at SCF.
TIG has been on both boards for years and his contribution to the usability of SketchUp is right up there with the best of themā¦even those who have since been seconded onto the SketchUp Team itself.
Guys,
I did not say i would not be using the forumā¦what i said was, TIG is advertising āabsolutely freeā use of the plugins on his website. What he DOES NOT SAY is that you must pay in order to get access to the website in the first place.
Can you now see the ethics issue i have raised?
In my view this would be the exact same thing as me saying to you, āhey guys, i have a free laptop to give away.ā Then saying āoh but you need to pay $2000 to become a member of my raffle group before you can enter the draw to win one!ā
I dont trust people who cannot be up front with their fees and charges. It says a lot about character.
If he said up front it costs money to become a member im would think differently. I like things to be above boardā¦its a trust thing.
Show exactly where you got that nonsense. There is absolutely no place where TIG is advertising anything and there is no place where it says you must pay to get access. You clearly did not read my post and look at the screen shot I made.
You are making an issue of nothing. There is no ethics issue with Sketchucation.
You clearly donāt have any clue, do you?
NO⦠itās not @TIGās website and he is a Sage here as wellā¦
havenāt you read any of the post following your initial attack on a highly regarded member of our SketchUp communityā¦
many of us participate both here and on SketchUcation, which IS a free to join websiteā¦
john
Dave you are supposed to be a respected member of the community. Is saying āyou dont have a clue do youā the normal way a person so highly regarded treats newcomers?
when i registered my username it took me to a paypal page in order to complete the registration process after i signed up for a free account.
is that not what happens to the rest of all applications.
Why is it asking for paypal details?
You didnāt click on the button I indicated in my screen shot. If you had, you would not have been taken to a paypal page. I donāt understand how you can continue to insist that thereās anything unethical going on since there isnāt. And you seem to be unable to understand, despite the information weāve given you that TIG is not misleading you. Considering how many plugins and extensions heās written and made available at no charge and the hours heās invested in helping other SketchUp users, you are just being insulting to him.
Ok Dave,
i havent read your post with the screen shotā¦i apologise for that. I would appreciate that you dont get nasty at a newbie because they took issue with having to provide details when taken through the registration process as outlined on his website.
Free should not be asking for paypal details as part of the free user registration process.
I am not after free btwā¦i am happy to pay for his plugins and service 100%, i have absolutely no issue with the idea that one cannot continue to offer free services and earn a living. Its just that like the rest of you, i get lots of scammers trying to steal from me, hack my accounts etcā¦so i get a bit dark when things dont seem above board.
I have registered an account as you suggested and i thank you for that information.
It isnāt his website.
It doesnāt ask for paypal details unless you choose a premium membership option.
No one is trying to scam you or steal from you.
I didnt mean he was trying to steal from meā¦i was saying in this world of scammers and hackers and false advertising we all face that problem.
Anyway, i dont want to fill this thread with my perceived bad initial experience. I realise its unfair to the forum.
Thanks for setting me straight.
To round this offā¦
SketchUcation has over 450,000 members.
Many of these have a free-membership.
There is no need to pay to join SketchUcation.
The Registration page clearly offers both free and premium memberships options.
If you choose a non-free option you will be asked for PayPal details - as you will then pay a modest joining fee, which brings many advantages too.
This fee, and some revenue from sponsors and discreet relevant advertising is what pays for SketchUcation.
Running servers and maintaining a site costs money, although many involved in SketchUcation give their time and expertise freelyā¦
The many thousands of paid members get many assets, discounts, freebies and so on.
However, āordinaryā members get to post upload and download for free.
There are several options to go on to the free membership from the Registration page: at the very start
It is no oneās fault but your own if you do not read details before clicking on things.
SketchUcation has assisted hundreds of thousands of SketchUp users.
It is not a scam or seeking to trick you - that is all in your imagination.
Please be less willing to jump to conclusions about others, especially when itās actually entirely your own fault !
I have personally invested many hours of my time in keeping SketchUcation going, together with the other stalwart guys there.
As well as being a Sage here, I am a director at SCF, but I receive no wages from doing either of these at all.
As Dave says SCF is not āmy siteā - itās actually yours !
Itās a community resource - paying a modest membership fee, if you can afford it, helps everyone.
Otherwise just contribute by posting in the forums and helping others where you can.
As Dave says I also have written many hundreds of extensions/plugins/utilities to help users advance in their SketchUp useā¦
All but a handful of these are free to download/install [I donāt mind a donation, but thatās always voluntary].
Many others has also written other tools and the PluginStore is a recognized repository for both extensions and simpler pluginsā¦
Actually TIG,
perhaps you could check my signup details. Iām fairly sure that will correct your misunderstanding about what happened to me during signup.
I would insist that if something like this happened so easily to me, others would often make similar mistakes. Perhaps that is food for thought!
I did click on the free option and it still asked for paypal details. My ussumption is, perhaps someone has configured the website to do this either for two reasons, one to help out with the likelihood of any future purposes, or a mistake that has since been very rapidly corrected by the website administrator after I brought it up.
kind regards
Adam
If you did click sign up for free, all you will need to provide is an email address. You made a mistake face it, I clicked all three selections two years ago, to see what was up. And I just recieved this today from them, because I have a free account with them:
How can TIG check your sign up details? Once againā¦itās not his site.
Maybe one of the admins might, as they are frequently both here and there. But to be honest, Iād imagine that the, couldnāt care less whether you signed up or not after this.
What donāt you get about Sketchucation being the oldest and largest SketchUp community on the face of the planet, with hundreds of thousands of free users whoāve signed up with no problem whatsoever? If things were as you claim, then donāt you think one of them might have mentioned somethingā¦years ago?
Your persistent attempts to paint Sketchucation as some kind of minor, deceitful rip-off siteā¦scurrying about to cover their tracks after you supposedly exposed their duplicity is nothing short of ridiculous.
One last bite, then Iāll stop.
As far as I know none of the three āfree membershipā links have ever taken you to a page asking for PayPal details.
Of course the joining form will ask for an email address and other details, but that is normal for such sitesā¦
The set up has not been changed for a very long time.
I doubt very much that any of the pagesā code was changed recently.
Certainly, the lone server admin was away this weekend when I tried to contact him over another unrelated matter, so it wonāt have been him doing anything.
As Alan said, many hundreds of thousands of users have signed up for a free-account without difficulty.
Very very occasionally someone will not read the page properly and complain about it not offering a free account.
This is usually because English is not their native language and they do not have Google-Translate set up either.
However, in the case of this complainant he seems to have an English based user-name and write in English with some erudition - it is just his reading, understanding and link clicking skills which are questionableā¦
If you can replicate the āfree-click gives a form asking for PayPal detailsā, then please make a short movie of it and either attach it to a post, or PM it to me, or more sensibly post it on SketchUcation - we probably shouldnāt he having this protracted conversation hereā¦
Donāt disparage the TIG, a generous and highly respected memberā¦
