Feedback about materials and preview thumbnails (has Trimble Made a Huge Mistake—But It’s Not Too Late to Fix It)

New users won’t write long forum posts. They won’t fight. They’ll just leave. Quietly. One by one. And we’ll only notice when it’s too late.

— Speaking for the ones who haven’t arrived yet.

Indeed, questionable.
SketchUp was the father we all followed. He gave us structure, direction, and a simple way to learn and grow. But now, the structure is shifting—and not for the better.

The kids he raised? We’re no longer beginners. We know what works. And when the guidance starts to break down, it’s on us to say something.

— Maybe the father still leads, but he needs to start listening.

that’s an awfully patriarcal vision you got there.
I always pictured Sketchup as a she. so a mom maybe ? anyway, mine moves furnitures around all the time, if I were to complain about it I would never stop complaining.

I still don’t get your rant, or rather, why you remain so fixated on it. yes, new materials have been added. yes old materials are still available. yes it requires some knowledge of sketchup, but then again, people so attached to the older materials have several years of SU under the belt, so they should manage.
it took me maybe 3 min to add the older materials to my new SU ?
(at this point, several persons gave you several ways to do it. just out of the goodness of their heart)

the only thing is the cube shape, it has been discussed in the labs, since the release, it’s a point we all agree on, the UI of the material panel is not great. the UI in the 3d warehouse is better, where we can switch from flat to cube.

and guess what, it’s a first draft, it’s been one way for 24 years, and now they are trying to innovate. arching yourself on the idea that “we need to go back to the old ways” is not helping.

great attitude.
right now you’re the guy who came to declare SU made a terrible mistake and they should revert to the past.

you could try to integrate yourself in the forum. you know, go to other threads, show us your work in the SketchUp > Gallery .
If you treat this forum as only a place to complain, don’t expect too much.

I mean, you’ve made 3 threads, two are complaints about this issue

the third is about how the new anti aliasing is different from the old one and you don’t like it.

maybe the solution in the end is to stick to sketchup 2024 and prior, using the classic engine ? it’s ok to do so, nobody is forcing you to upgrade…

I don’t think you speak for everyone…

So you are upset because your viewpoint is not well received.

Once you’ve launched '25 on a networked license, you’ve lost access to '24!

I’ve never used a network license but that seems odd.

Your template and materials folders should still be there so you can copy / open / etc. as needed.

I had to look that one up..

Do this kind of “classic” network licenses still exist? Sounds pre-subscription.

yeah, training centres, computer labs in universities…

I see them a lot in training centres, they have a specific set of machines with a lab licence and specific softwares. good thing is, you can use them with a free account and they won’t start your trial period. also, no need to log in / out / deauthorize all all the time.

Just out of curiosity, as I am not planning on doing this, I tried locating the content of these folders, but for every folder in my roaming appdata for every SketchUp install (in years), these folders appear empty. So copying contents won’t do I think?

My windows folders look like this:
***\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2025\SketchUp\Materials

Or would I be looking in the wrong place?

Thanks, Steven

I haven’t used a windows machine in forever… but here is a recent post:

Nice! They indeed do contain all the materials.

Thank your for your very quick and to the point reply Mike. Haven’t used windows in forever? Try it.. it’s great

The only windows I’m comfortable with are the ones that open to let in fresh air. When I teach I always have to re-think / re-learn / remember where stuff is.

Great idea !
It would be nice though to be able to choose between the cube and flat thumbnails, but at least it’s not spheres that Su has gone with (I’ve seen stupid spheres in render programs since the late 1980’s and have always wondered why anyone would want to try and test materials on spheres, but heh, that’s yet another odd convention).
I like @Anssi s suggestion of an asymmetric cube view if there has to be one, less agressive and quite helpful…
But whichever representation, it’s great to have the old & the new all in one folder.

I agree! Add to functionality in lieu of just ditching one to adopt another! I’ve been critical of SketchUp / LayOut of late due to faster and more reliable functionalities being discarded in favour of a clickfest approach when these new functions could easily co-exist with the original function. It just needs the UX guys to open their minds!

I don’t really know if “Network License” is the correct term, I had to log out of '24 and login to '25, then log out of '25 but can’t log back into '24! Logging back into '24 I get a message I have to many active licenses!

You need to clear your sign in by deauthorizing so you can sign back in.

I did sign out of '25, strange that I can log out of '24 > log into '25 > log out of '25 > not able to log back into '24, > but can log back into '25!
