Feature request : Lock on XYZ Plan

Hello Sketchup people,
Thank you for all the work you put in this program. I love it!

Here is something I’d like to see in Sketchup:
Lock to XYZ plans - as complementary feature to the already existing Lock to XYZ Axis.
Using arrow + a modifier key. Exemple :

I’d use that all the time for moving, drawing, measuring things…

Fredo6 has this “Move Along” tool that does just that. And I use it regularly on light models.
But as great as it is, it gets very slow on heavy models. To a point that I can’t use it when I need it most.

I think it wouldn’t clutter the Sketchup experience the least bit, if integrated that way.
That being said, it feels so obvious of a functionnality that it’s probably already there somewhere, and I missed the memo…

+1 on this, a simple modifier key and arrow to differentiate the plane lock from the linear axis lock should be pretty simple to implement and would speed up the workflow a bit.

The functionality should be identical to axis-locking while using the rectangle tool, so I don’t think it would add any complexity to the program.

Doesn’t this already exist for rectangle, circle, move etc. with ‘Constrained on Plane’?

  1. I don’t see why that behaviour shouldn’t be possible in other tools.
  2. How does one select the plane they are constraining to when using the move tool? I had mentioned I’d expect it to work like rectangle and circle, but I’ve never come across anything that explains how to make it happen in move or other commands.

Unless I’m missing something the Instructor window only describes how to lock single directions, not to planes.

Hold Shift when you see “On Face” tip…

That’s a good trick! Thanks for the tip.
I overlooked that function of the move tool, and it will certainly come in handy.
For me it doesn’t quite replace the original suggestion of this post though.
As it requires a face, and work only on the move tool.
The arrow key axis locking works with any tool, in any circumstance, in any context. That’s really what I would love to have also for plane locking.
I see my illustration was quite misleading though, since there is a face on the plane along witch the house move.

You could have done without the face since you would still be moving the house in the XY plane (=red/green), or along a direction parallel to the blue axis.
(Or ‘Constrained on line’ if you would pick another target first and then hold [Shift].

In your case if you need another XY plane, rotate the drawing axes as needed an your move, rectangle, circle etc. will respect that new red/green plane (or a plane parallel to that Y=0 plane)
