Would I need to convert an FBX to, say, STL if I want to use it? And is a 150mb FBX file too large to handle?

FBX is not a native import option for SketchUp Free. Converting it to .stl would be one way. I don’t know how large a .stl file from a 150 Mb FBX file would be but it could be too large for the hobbyist version of SketchUp.
You could try Autodesk’s old free FBX Converter to convert to DAE that can be imported to SketchUp
There is also a free FBX online converter that says it can convert to SKP
