Exporting to Sketchup

I’ve added a post on the commercial forum about having models made but also wondering if buying a model from here is possible and exporting it to Sketchup. Has anyone tried? Very frustrating that they seem to create for lots of software except Sketchup!

There are several 3D file formats what you can import natively into Sketchup, such as : 3ds Max (3DS), Collada (DAE), Digital Elevation Model (DEM/DDF), 3D Autocad (DWG/DXF), Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), Google Earth (KMZ), STereoLithography (STL).

See also here how to import/export each: Using SketchUp Data with Other Modeling Programs or Tools | SketchUp Help

In the list of the Exchange format list on your linked model you can see the 3D Studio (.3ds) witch is on the above importable list. (Personally I have no experience to import this kind of files, and how the importing result looks like, but most likely you can import it without much issues.)

To clarify, 3DS is the file format of the old (pre-Autodesk) 3D Studio application. Even though almost obsolete, it is still widely used. 3D Studio Max has its own proprietary file format (.MAX) that can only be opened in the original application. All available converters from that format require the presence of a licensed copy of 3D Studio Max.

Okay I have AutoCad is this not suitable?

This is what AutoCAD 2025 can import…

Thanks. I think I need to get my head around this all more. A lot to learn. I need to update my Autocad too as it currently 23.

AutoCad file formats (DWG, DXF) are generally OK for transferring 3D geometry but materials, textures and UV mapping need often to be reapplied, as that part is stored in a format that other applications cannot read.

If you’re on subscription it’s easy to do.
