Exporting textures when applied to a group

When I want to export my work to an .obj file textures get only exported if they are applied to faces but not when they are applied to a group (exporting textures is enabled in the options menu).

How do I get around this, or am I missing something?

The most obvious solution would be to apply the textures to the faces in the first place.

Applying the texture to each face was the thing I tried to avoid by asking this question, but it appears that there is no other way.

How about exploding the groups and components before exporting? The materials will be preserved. After exporting, you can revert to the saved version of your model.
