Exporting OBJ/FBX from Sketchup 2017

Hello guys,

I need to export the Sketchup 2017 files in FBX\OBJ formats. I need to open these export files in Cinema 4D. There seems no other option apart from dae export in Sketch up Make 2017.

Can anyone advice me what to do to make ends meet. Would be a great help.

Plugin TIG: OBJ Exporter v3.0

Thanks for the reply. However i havent set the plugins with sketch up 2017. Can you help me with that too ?

What do you mean by that?

If you do not already have an account on Sketchucation, you create one and download the plugin. Then you install it from SketchUp: Window > Extension Manager.

You can then access it from: File > OBJexporter

Hi Mihai,

thanks for your reply again. I did create the account and downloaded the extension.
However to make it read, i am openng the extension manager in my Sketch Up 2017.
But the dialog box opens and a blank screen appears. Kindly have a look at the screenshot.

It should look like that:
extension2

If you try open: Window > Extension Warehouse, is it loaded correctly?

I was hoping it appears like that, but just the blank screen shows. and it doesnt change.

And this?

same problem appears here as well。I wonder why.

Perhaps you have not installed SketchUp correctly ?

Try to repair it…
Do this while logged in as your normal Windows user account.
It does not matter whether or not you have admin powers.
Close SketchUp.
Find the installer exe file - probably in your Downloads folder ?
Select its icon.
Right-click > context-menu > “Run as administrator”
When prompted choose “Repair”…

After it completes restart SketchUp and see if anything is improved…

If not, then you can repeat the process above [using “Run as administrator”] but instead of the “Repair” you then choose “Uninstall” - then when that’s done repeat the process again and “Install”…

if you have downloaded the file you need to open “extension manager” not extension wharehouse.
and install from the manager.

The extension Manager is also showing blank without any change.

Hi TIG. I tried both repairing and reinstalling the entire software but the problem still persists. I am reading on other links that it could be related to some OneDrive settings.

For exporting .obj’s, I use Blender (it’s free). Just import a .dae into Blender, then export a .obj. They have .fbx too… Despite the difficulty of Blender, exporting files is really easy. File > Export

hey forestr, thanks for the advice. I am trying the same now. The only question is do you know the settings of removing the triangular faces and polygons away when exportig them to fbx or obj format.

While exporting collada i am using the Triangulate all faces in the export dialog box of Sketch up because if i dont do so, so faces go missing in blender.

From there i am trying to export into fbx and obj. Is there a particular option to remove the triangulated faces there.

Hmm… what language version of SketchUp do you have?

Delete all the section planes and explode all the geometry. Blender might not recognize a section plane or leader text (causing errors), but it does fine with just geometry. Default settings should work fine.

“OneDrive”
How are you using it, and how might it be relevant ?

Exporting to the ‘cloud’ or a ‘network’ locations risks various problems - like time-outs etc…
