Is there a way to control the number of segments that SU creates in an arc? I would like to make the arc smoother hence increase the number of segments.

When you first get the Arc or 2-Point Arc tool, the Measurements window will show the number of sides. Type a new value if you want it to be different. Be aware that for small arcs, SketchUp will limit the number of sides to avoid creating very short segments that will cause problems.
Don’t go overboard with the number of sides. It’s easy to get too many and needlessly bloat your file. I would suggest that you use some multiple of 12 and most likely you won’t need more than 48 for most modeling.
