Double Hung Sash Dimensions

I’m trying to draw some double hung windows. It’s been a very long time since I sold them. I don’t remember dimensions and don’t have any to measure. I searched and could not find the information I seek. I would guess them to be 1" to maybe 1.25" wide and about the same thickness.

I want to know the nominal size of sash frames and muntins used in double hung windows. IIRC, muntins are rabbeted at or very near a quarter inch to accept glass panes but I can’t recall the typical width of muntins.

I’m pretty sure that windows are sized based on the outside dimensions of the window frames; thus a standard 4060 double hung single window is 4’0" by 6’0" (where the 4060 designation comes from) and contains 2 sashes. Assuming that the sash frames are smaller by the thickness of frames - putatively 3/4" - then their outside dimensions would be 48" less 1.5" or 46.5" wide and the 2 sashes together would be 72" - 1.5" or 70.5" high. One must account for the fact that each sash is in its own track and they overlap at top and bottom. IIRC, the overlap is at or near 1.5".

These recollections inform me then that the outer dimensions of each sash would be ~46.5" wide by 35.25" + 1.5" overlap or 36.75" high. Mental estimates would cause me to assign ~4" to the width of a sash frame and 1-3/4" to 2" in thichness.

Can anyone provide me with a link to where I can find these dimensions or provide them. Nominal dimension would be great.

Not sure I understand your question.

How about going to the 3D Warehouse, search for “double hung windows” … with the filter set for “products”?

When I did this search of the the 3D Warehouse I found 613 SketchUp models of real windows … from Marvin, Milgard, Pella, Kolbe et cetera.

And here is the SketchUp model of one of the Pella 4060 double hung windows:

i would add that many of the pro models have a lot of extra geometry which might not matter for your work. in my case, once i set the sizes, i’ll either use the outer shell function or just explode and regroup then clean up.

Thank you, Gentlemen.

I looked in the 3D Warehouse but didn’t see the branded product drawings.

I’ll look again.

Go to the 3D Warehouse <<< This is a link … click on it!

Type “double hung windows” into search criteria window … (the rectangle that reads “Search for content…”)

Click on the search icon … (the magnifying glass).

This will bring up the first page of search results.

In the upper right hand corner is a “switch” that reads “Filters” … click on it.

That will open up an “All Model Filters” pull-out window on the left.

Select the “Products” button (under “Result Types”).

Press the “Enter” key.

Below is a link to the SketchUp model of one of the windows in the 3D Warehouse, a Pella 4060 double hung window.

This is the exact size you were asking about.

Download this SketchUp model (SKP file) … open it … measure any and everything.

This model is certified by Pella … so I’m thinking it is a good representation of the dimensions of their windows.
