Dimensions moving all over the place after updating model reference

I am using sketchup 2025 and am really having a problem with my dimensions in layout moving all over the place when I update my model reference in sketchup. Even if i move them back into place or redimension everything if I have to make any minor changes to my model all kinds of dimensions that have no relation to the changes I have made jump all over the place once I update my model reference. What could be causing this? I am having to waste a lot of time realigning and redimensioning all kinds of stuff. What am I doing wrong here?

Share your LayOut file so we can see what you’ve set up.

Also update your forum profile.

Hey Dave thanks for responding. Unfortunately I can’t share the file, I was just wondering if there are any known reasons why it would do this and if there are some safe dimensioning techniques one might use to avoid this sort of problem?

Well the most common reasons for this are user-induced. Not creating scenes in the Sketchup model to use for the viewports, not saving Camera Position with the scenes, overriding the Camera properties for the viewports, changing the camera position or the model position in the model file, or a combination.

If the scenes are set up correctly and the Camera properties are not modified in LayOut, there’s no reason for the model or the dimensions to move in the viewports.

Thanks again Dave. I have my scenes set up properly and I have not modified the camera properties. The scene location in layout isn’t changing itself, it’s just the actual dimensions keep jumping around and many instances where lines of dimensions I had set by double clicking are all of a sudden no longer in line after updating the model reference.

Well, I gave you the most common reasons for what you report. Unfortunately with nothing of substance to go on in your case there’s really nothing more to say.

Dimensions aren’t connected to the viewport model?
Even with my stacked viewports the odd dimension with disconnect and then connect to something else. Luckily the dimensions will usually be in ‘red’.
Does this seem what is happening with yours?

This also happens to me very frequently, but the real issue is the placement of the dimension lines moving out of place. For example I had a string of dimensions which were dimensioned to grid lines just below my model. After updating my model reference the half of the dimension string suddenly moved up over the model. They are still connected to the model they just seem to move out of place randomly.

Oh I see.
This does happen to me, although not very often since setting my dimension extension lines to ‘length’ instead of ‘gap’.
If my memory serves me correctly, it appears that they moved depending on where the dimension endpoint/s are attached to the sketchup model, for example.
Hasn’t happened for a few weeks but I will look closer next time to see if there’s another reason.

I will try this setting, thanks!
