Developer needed to create custom extension for cabinetry

We’re a company looking to have a customized extension made for our purpose. We have our requirements already laid out. Please respond to info@designbytatenda.com

Hi Tatenda,

There are many developers who can create a custom plugin. At the same time with the rise of AI, I do wanna caution you around incurring a lot of fees for development if you want to try out to create a prototype using a Ruby script generated by an AI.

You can take a look at my video below where I create a custom plugin using OpenAI’s ChatGPT. You’ll see that SketchUp, through SketchUp Assistant, is also allowing you to connect directly to Claude and create similar functionality. Let me know if you’d be interested to go down that route. I’ll also reach out to you on email.

Here a little bit more of an in-depth exploration showing how to use the AI tools to get to the output.

I concur with Joshua. Im also in cabinets and millwork and use SketchUp extensively for documentation. Plugins are now very much within the realm of the design or production office. Learn Claude. If you already have a full development document you can upload that into Claude and it will then have your mind on the end product. It will then help you setup a Github system and by end of day one you are already testing a beta.
Joshua is doing it and so are many others, including me. Sorry to all the coders who have put all the years of labor into learning the craft…I already have a few different plugins and even desktop apps that took me minutes to produce and I know nothing about coding languages. Did one two weeks ago…my wife was giving birth and I needed a contraction timer. I opened Claude and quickly asked for it to find a timer for me. Instead in made an app in 30 seconds. this is the future. Learn it now before you are out of business.

Oh, I see, THIS is the bad place.
I get it.

what a dystopia.

use a watch. hold her hand. poor kid was AI assisted from day one.

Sarcasm at its finest. Man, I love a forum with engineering minds behind the keyboards.

It wasn’t sarcasm. and clearly you missed my point. it’s ok, I don’t really care.

Also, please note that promoting your youtube channel is frowned upon. you don’t see Justin posting about his videos

Tnyalaz is looking for a dev for a mission, no need for the both of you to come try evangelise about AI. there is a “great” place for that, it’s linkedin.
because at the end of the day, they need a dev, not a claude subscription.

and I’m not convinced you’re an actual human. I mean, you are, but your tone, your messages, something feels off for a community forum.
be real, you tasked an AI agent to maintain your presence and post around here ?

But he’s asking specifically for a customized extension and depending on where his business is at, which I don’t have insight to. Wouldn’t it be great to offer him the AI opportunity alongside the developer opportunity to test this idea out without incurring the cost of development? It can at least give him a taste for what is out there in the market rather than him spending the cost and then only realizing that there was another route he could potentially take.

GPT-5.6 is another great option.

This is a highly realistic smart lock it created for my Window Crafter plugin, all using the standard $20 subscription.

@tnyalaz What exactly are you trying to build?

Seriously…Claude was holding the baby as she fell…good thing ai exists actually because a sage wasn’t there to lend a hand…and I don’t wear a watch…to 20th century…moving hands and such.

Oh and this is a public forum and I can comment on whatever I want to I think. Lots of rude people around. I see it all the time in here. I can even bug everyone and talk about how great Odyssey is…or isn’t. Don’t ask a Greek. That’s public forums.

And technically speaking, the OP is looking for a solution to a problem. A problem they could legitimately solve with devs or with Ai irregardless if that fits the motif of the experts. I wasn’t being rude or changing the subject. I was interjecting a possible solution. But then I guess there are no possibilities outside the direct language of the post. So uncreative and lockstep.

Speaking of “real or not,” the original poster’s website doesn’t work.

I’ve got my popcorn… Continue thread please!

AI definitely seems to be a contentious issue on the Sketchup forum

…everyday life.

pass some to me please.

Guys, I think we are being trolled.

As Hamzah198501 pointed out … www.designbytatenda.com does not appear to exist.

And … why would a company using SketchUp Make (“retired” almost a decade ago) want to develop a custom extension?

Not sure the intent of the OP … but am having a hard time time seeing the business opportunity here.

Yeah, to someone who has devoted the last 11 years of their life to creating a very in-depth plugin suite (mdkBIM) this is very demoralizing. Within a couple years or less everyone will be able to create the equivalent of what I have done (10+ years) within a couple of weeks… its coming.

Hi Nathaniel for you as someone who has spent so much time learning how to code and to develop the plugins. do you feel now that some of the ideas that you have but weren’t able to execute in the past due to time constraint or worried to see value in your investment for a potential low user base, that you can now using AI shorten that time frame and try out some of those ideas? Have you got any ideas at present that with the help of AI in the past you weren’t able to execute due to the complexity of it and now you can? i’ve only tried to vibe code something a few times but been amazed at the outcome of developing plugins that are completely stylized to my own way of working within SketchUp.

Perhaps the opportunity for you is not that in a couple of weeks people can do what took you 10 years to make but that your 10 years of experience can catapult you forward because you have the background in this in an environment that people new to this market don’t have

Technology never asks permission. It arrives uninvited and rewrites the rules.

The world’s best archers did nothing wrong. They were simply overtaken by new technology.

I’m not particularly opposed to AI as I think it does bring a lot of advantages. However it does scare me as a developer since these extensions have been my bread and butter since 2018.

What scares me worse though is the existential threats posed by AI. Some like Geoffrey Hinton are convinced we will have an extinction event in the very near future, he gives it about a 20% chance. It could be as simple as some bad actor creating a bio weapon with AI, The future is very unclear in my opinion. I didn’t have these misgivings four years ago.

New technology is always disruptive, firearms, automobiles, airplanes, steam engines, television, the internet, personal computers, nuclear weapons etc…. However, when technology is actually able to advance itself, this becomes a whole new animal. Almost like a virus or living organism that escapes the lab and we completely lose control of it.

Once we achieve recursive self improvement we really have no idea what sort of disruption to our society or the world AI will bring, what we do know is that we will no longer be the smartest species on the planet. That will be our final invention or technological breakthrough, at that point AI takes over and we become irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
