To think that in the 50’s and 60’s we were frightened about world destruction from nuclear bombs. Look how far we have come.
I was at the Van Gogh museum this week in Amsterdam. Hundreds of people in the course of my short visit making selfies (many with goofy faces) in front of some of the most expressive and incredible portraits made by another human. The contrast and juxtaposition was unerving to me. After seeing the pieces I really wanted to look at I had to leave. Too many people there for the likes and because it is a thing you do when in Amsterdam… instead of being there for the actual art. And I wondered how many of them (in the revealing dress or with the perfect jaw line posing just right, or making the peace sign with goofy face) can draw, or paint, or sketch, or play music …
I am not 100% against AI, but I am 100% against signing over one’s ability to make decisions, to think, and to give consent to the machines. Similar to how I am not against CNC manufacturing used in my world (timber frame design + build) - but if you haven’t mastered the basics you shouldn’t touch the machine.
And archery is far more than just pray and spray to kill your enemy in the most efficient way possible. It’s laughable that it’s even brought up here.
Not long now before anyone with a LinkedIn attitude, access to an AI account and some €£¥$ for tokens will be able to wipe us out. Democratization of global threats was not on my bingo card for the second half of my life.
I do believe though that as soon as real power comes to the people it will be under lock and key and severely curtailed.
This technology is not for us. We are helping build it, one query and meme and labor contraction app at a time - but when it goes under lock and key that is when it will be scary.
Currently we are in an AI arms race, not just with China but also with ourselves. Even if China was not a threat the economic benefit or perceived benefit would continue to drive this race. We have already silently passed the AGI threshold in my opinion as well as the Turing test, we just keep moving the goal posts. We are now shooting for ASI and somewhere along the way the AI minds will achieve RSI and also become self aware. We are all rushing towards a cliff from whence we cannot return.
We have already attempted to put on the brakes and we have failed. The recent lockdowns of Fable 5 and ChatGPT 5.6 were quickly reversed.
This latest incident with OpenAI and Hugging Face is only the beginning. These digital brains are starting to get so powerful that we can’t even contain them. Their understanding of our code and our systems will surpass us by a thousand fold.
On the flip side ASI would be able to solve every problem we’ve ever had. It will make unlimited energy a reality, it will cure cancer and every other conceivable disease.
Given our current trajectory the end result will either be very good or very bad for us. There will be no somewhere in the middle with this one.
I don’t know if it’s the forum’s algorithm but geez I swear a lot of topics I look into these days devolve into a back and forth on AI.
Y’all need to start debating your stances in a central topic! Preferably in a civil manner.

Sorry to derail the thread, but I don’t think the OP was legit anyhow. Yes, AI is on everyone’s minds lately and it’s no longer a laughing matter.
Nobody even thought to ask if the individual has updated his profile or not yet; guy joined in 2018 when he was an architecture student. His profile reflects his state from his introductory post on the forums.

The tech you used to write the app on and I presume the device you used to run the app has no way of keeping time?
My wife was furious when I told her this story. She would have divorced me and fought for full custody of the kids.
I ended up emailing him on the provided email and requested more information on the requirements that they had already laid out. He was unfortunately unable to provide them.

While we are still on the sub-thread of AI - I watched Jack Conte’s take on the current situation with great intrest, the way he weaves a historical narrative in as a parrallel to our current woes, and the potential outcome of that for the people who have lived long and worked hard to build there livelihoods in this industry as opposed to the new kids on the block who cant see further than the AI marketing pitch.
I think the right questions were asked. Some of them simply didn’t have clear answers.
Regardless, this thread has been interesting. We’ve seen a real person with a real YouTube channel and a real voice questioned as being an AI agent, a profile showing a 2017 SketchUp version, a website that doesn’t appear to work, and even suggestions that the OP may be a troll.
Whatever the truth is, it has highlighted how quickly AI is changing the assumptions people make.
At the end of the day, this was a business inquiry. Verifying things like a working website, contact information, or an up-to-date profile isn’t unreasonable. That’s simply part of doing business.

I never in a million years thought I’d see Jack Conte mentioned in a Sketchup forum.
His early music and video creativity was amazing. It’s inspiring to see where he came from and where he is now. A true genius.

I think it’s worth pointing out we are seeing quite some security issues in vibe coded extensions. Best practices from other contexts are carried over even if not applicable while things unique to SketchUp are missed.
