Dark Mode Option

Dark Mode is a necessity. It is the ONLY software I use professionally that doesn’t have a dark mode. It’s almost impossible to use in the studio. Cruising along day to day, everything is tuned up fine, then need to use Sketchup and get BLASTED. I have to open up my monitor settings and turn down brightness, then every other single program I use is too dim to see. For the first time I’m thinking about completely replacing SketchUp with another software…and Im not one of these doom and gloom guys. I don’t whine about what SketchUp can’t do or weaknesses. I’ve been using 3ds Max for years, but prefer to work in SU when I can. But this is just too ridiculous. It’s such a basic thing that every other software offers.
For a while, I’ve been using a program called ‘classic color’ to change SU’s GUI to darker colors to create my own dark mode. But I just upgraded from 2023 to 2026 after building a new PC. It seems SU changed where they get their color setting from because ‘Classic Color’ no longer works for this. (CC allows you to change colors that are set by old Win32 reg values…so I guess SU changed this. Hopefully that means they are updating code to allow the addition of dark mode in the next update….fingers crossed.)
Anyway, I never moan about SU’s shortcomings…I either find a workaround or use something else. Now that my workaround isn’t working anymore I need to find a new one or find another program to use…(or put up with having to fiddle with my monitor settings every time I use the one program left that is too precious to have a dark mode option.)
If any SU Devs are reading. How can the GUI colors be changed in the latest version? Are they exposed anywhere that a 3rd party software could tweak? Like Winblinds, etc? Or is it hard written in the code now?

Fully agree it is ridiculous that there is still no dark mode for SketchUp. Is setting up an alternate colour scheme that hard? SketchUp seems to miss low hanging fruit regularly with their updates.

Same goes for the Trim, Extend, Fillet, Chamfer feature many users have asked for years to be implemented in SU … so they have now implemented it in LO?? :exploding_head: :exploding_head: :exploding_head:

@GD3Design Rather than starting a new feature request, add your vote to the one already in Feature Requests - SketchUp Community (currently at number 4 in the list) and maybe if enough people do it, then in future some resources can get allocated to that project… (but if it’s literally only 7 people who care enough about this feature to click the Vote button, then probably going to be a long wait!)

Food, water and shelter are neccesities, everything else is luxury..

This is somewhat disingenuous, the option to Vote has only recently been added and doesn’t reflect the actual number of people that have shown an interest in Dark Mode.
Yes, moving forward it may be a way of highlighting the amount of interest into one thread, but it does not take into account the many thousands of views of the many threads related to Dark Mode. I large number of those views are probably from people that would have voted had the option been available when they Searched How to use Dark Mode.
If Dark Mode isn’t of benefit/wanted, why did the Ipad version developers include it.

And i always thought money money money was the one and only neccesity … which can buy you the luxury of food, water, shelter …. and Sketchup!

Added my vote as it seems to be an important issue to those grown up with video games. I use computers in a well lit environment so I won’t be using it personally.

So are you saying Dark Mode is more of an age thing?

I grew up with Video games, but that was in the 80’s with a C64 unboxed, plugged in to the lounge TV, used, then unplugged, re-boxed and put back in the cupboard. It was always in a well lit room as “you’ll get bad eyesight if you watch TV in the dark” was a popular phrase from both parents.

Have the Dark Mode moaners grown up in darkened bedrooms xboxing until the early hours?

Personally it doesn’t bother me either way. Some of my software is set to dark mode, some isn’t. I see benefits of both.

Genuine question here - If you use Dark Mode all day long, then leave your office into the big wide (and bright) world do you squint until your eyes adjust?

When I started using computers and AutoCad 2.5 in 1986 “Dark mode” was all that was available, yellow or white pixels on a black background. The glare from luminaires, windows etc. on the surfaces of the CRT monitors was often almost unbearable. My first own computer was a Macintosh Plus, and that reversed the situation with its 9” black-on white display.

For those that want dark mode (I’m neutral) - how does it work when preparing scenes for rendering / LayOut? I tend to like seeing shadows and lighting, etc. - so even if I was in ‘dark mode’ my viewport would be bright, lit by the sun (in most cases), etc.

I can see a way that my modeling styles would work well in DM, as well as the general interface (good luck heavy extension users! There seems to be no UI guidelines or requirements!). But I’m not sure how modeling / presentation / etc. would look.

Darkmode isn’t really about changing the viewport style, that can be whatever you want, it’s about changing the toolbars, pallets and trays. It’s those that are not currently controllable.

I would like to see Dark Mode implemented. As someone with age fading eyesight, the UI’s I have worked with in Dark Mode tend to have better Icon contrast. SU isn’t so bad on the Icon front, but for those programs like Archicad that have adopted the fading grey trend, I find sometimes it is nearly impossible to tell if a tool had been activated. It is unfortunate that UI designers seem to think in terms of fashion rather than basic simple usability.

In the industry, only Blender has a worse UI than Archicad. It’s a mishmash of interfaces, starting with elements that were current in the original MacOS.

Everyone, we are splitting the vote!:worried: We need to put our votes on this first feature request thread, and we might get dark mode per @daniel_pidcock.

Indeed the vote option has only been there for a year or so, but if we use number of views as a measure it is way down the priority list! Also votes are a way better measure of actual user interest.

It is of benefit and wanted.
The iPad team could include it because they didn’t have 25 years of UI code & icons, built on multiple different UI frameworks to go through and adjust, and then test every single bit of UI on all platforms and multiple operating systems. Instead they were building a new UI from scratch. Also the iPad UI has a considerably smaller number of controls than the desktop UI. And don’t forget, there is not a major project (Qt) on iPad such that it really doesn’t make sense to add colour mode capability to the entire UI, and then rewrite the UI in Qt.
[edit] And how could I forget layout! That has a really extensive UI, and shipping dark mode sketchup without dark mode layout would probably not be well received by regular layout users…

The 3 threads for this feature request total 36 votes, up from 7 in 24 hours, just sayin’…

@rwamoore That really makes it sounds like I promised it! Are you trying to get me fired

All I’m saying is getting all the votes on that one feature request means it might get some more attention internally. But there are a lot of competing priorities for UI resources on desktop!
