Create Tileable Hatch Textures with Sketchup

Last week I’ve been asked how to create Hatch Pattern Textures to use with Sketchup Sections. Here it is:

  1. Create a very big flat square component with the corner in the origin of the model axis. Mine is 2540m wide. (One inch is 0.254m and Sketchup is based in inches.)
  2. Array it into 9 connected tiles so you can see what you are doing.
  3. Edit the center component and draw our pattern design.
  4. See the tiled design by toggling View > Component Edit > Hide Similar Components
  5. Offset it so it has line thickness.
  6. Erase loose edges.
  7. Paint the line thickness faces black (material must be based on a fully black texture)
  8. Paint the rest of the component’s faces white (material must be based on a fully white texture. the white face of my component was already painted before creating the component)
  9. Select all faces inside the component
  10. Right click a face and select “Combine Textures” from the context menu.

Have fun!
