I am somewhat new to Sketchup, proficient but not nearly any means an expert. Been using for roughly 3 years, as i work on remodeling projects around the house.
I know how to create components, say a 2x6x10ft, but say i am modeling an outdoor living that includes a storage room, and i have multiple studs, that are a variety on lengths (sloped roof), but i need t use 10ft lengths on them. So i am trying to get a Bill of Material count of how many 10ft i need, but in realty the model has a variety of lengths from 9’2" to 9’10"…
is it possible to create a component for a 2x6x10, but 'hide" a portion of the component to fit the length actually needed?
You can make a 2" x 6" x 10’ component easily enough. Then move/copy to make another one. After that you right click on the new one and select make unique from the index menu. Then size the new one to whatever you need. You still have the original to use. There is no way that I know of to hide just a portion of a component. You can make a tag for the original component and then hide the original, though.
A simple way to do this is the make a component as a 10’ 2x4 and distribute them as needed throughout your model. To change a size of a 2x4 employ the scale tool TO THE OUTSIDE of the component bounding box centered on the the long axis. This scales that particular instance only without changing the size of other instances and without breaking the instance link so that the total component count of 10’ 2x4 remains accurate.
