i want to make something similar to this image in sketchup however i dont really know how to properly make this double layer cladding with the supports in the centre especially as its a curved surface. help please
Can you share your model so we can see better what you are doing?
How are you going to use the model? It would most likely be best to use a texture rather than creating the actual geometry. With the actual geometry you’ll probably end up with a hige performance hit.
In the image it appears that the structure has compound curves that extend quite a way into the distance (relative to the size of the pieces). Without clarification on what the curvature really does, I’m not sure how to proceed. For example, it isn’t clear how many distinct components are needed and how each will bend and twist.
However, I would second @DaveR’s suggestion that you use textures, particularly for the plywood edges, as otherwise the model will need excessive amounts of geometry that won’t add much value.
this is my model, i just need that type of layers and cladding on the outside curved face of the model. I would just used a texture but its for my technical project so i need all the details
I would use a texture for the overall view and then make a full model from a small part to show the detail.
Are you planning to obtain sheets of veneer and laminate them to make your own plywood? If not, modeling each ply is not a “technical detail”. Without a note specifying the thickness, wood, and type of plywood (e.g. Baltic birch with uniform ply thickness vs conventional plywood with a paper-thin outer veneer) it is incomplete detail! I would attach such a note and use a material with an image of an appropriate plywood edge on the ends and sides of each plank. That will reduce the edge count in you model by a factor of about 6, assuming you want to use something like what is shown in your image. Reducing the edge count will improve performance in your model.
