Can't turn shadows for ground or faces

Can someone please tell me why I can’t select the shadows button for ground and faces?

Turn shadows on either by clicking Shadows in the view menu:

Or by clicking the button/icon that Dave showed you. That icon at the top left that looks like a little picture of a rectangle with a shadow is what you click. I’m ashamed to admit that I used SketchUp for years before I realised that you could click that.
