Can't open any files in Sketchup! Not even new files

Whenever I try to open Sketchup it loads me to the home screen, when I select any project it just crashes immediately no buffering/loading doesn’t open. This even happens when I try to open new models/projects.

Whenever I try to click on the files saved on my laptop without opening Sketchup it says that it’s a read only file, even when I click for it to load it just crashes.

This weirdly happened after sending a project to LayOut, it was working fine for a while 3-4 hours.. I don’t know if that has to do with it.
I can still open LayOut and it loads my project in a viewport when I insert skp, but I can’t open sketchup even through it.
I still don’t know why this effects all my files and even creating new files.

Things I’ve done

  1. I’ve tried to repair and I’ve then uninstalled sketchup and reinstalled it.
  2. Restarted and Shut down laptop multiple times.
  3. I thought it might’ve been from an extension I installed, I tried to check the plugin folder but it doesn’t show any files (The folder is also set to view hidden).
  4. I checked if my driver is up to date through device manager.
  5. Even when I click for Sketchup to open via the viewport from the Layout file it doesn’t work.
  6. When Sketchup crashes I can still see it in the task manager for a few seconds 10-20 before it disappears.

I’d appreciate any help, I’ll try and go to my friends house to see if my files work.

If they do open on your friend’s machine then perhaps your install if SketchUp is corrupted.

See if the preferences file has become corrupt:

SketcUp 2025 closes as soon as it opens - Technical Problems / SketchUp - SketchUp Community

If the files do not open on your friend’s machine, post them here or in shared cloud folder so someone else can have a look at the files.

Okay so that didn’t quite work, it kept crashing. However I managed to get it working by doing a clean install and weeding any file associated in my directory after uninstalling.
This was thanks to your recommendation as something in my data files was causing the problem and a standard reinstall wouldn’t do the trick.

C:\Program Files\SketchUp
C:\ProgramData\SketchUp
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\SketchUp
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp

I lost all customizations, any background files and extension data.

Definitely seems like the last resort, but I had to access the files urgently. I have only been a user for a month or so, but I think this is fine for me because the .skp files I had work fine and that’s my main priority.
