Can't make a face

I know I have lots of errors in my drawing except I have been able to insert it in Layout to create the elevation drawings for the kitchen supplier to create shop drawings. EXCEPT I can’t make the space below the cabinet above the sink into a face so that I can make it into subway tiles. Could you look at the skp file and see why this rectangle won’t change to a face no matter how many times I draw a rectangle around it (and then hide the line)?
Thank you!

Are you referring to the space in the selected rectangle?

Frankly your model has a lot of problems. You aren’t grouping your geometry, you aren’t using tags correctly and you have a lot mess of loose geometry including very short edges. My recommendation is to stop what you are doing with this model and learn to use SketchUp correctly. Make groups and components as you go along. Use tags correctly. Leave Untagged active at all times, leave ALL edges and faces untagged and give tags only to the groups and components in the model. Once you’ve learned to use the program correctly, start over on this model and build it right.

If you aren’t going to do that. I would suggest drawing a separate rectangle to give the subway tile patter to and make it a group. Then put it underneath the “wall” so it looks like it’s filling the space.

Here’s the result of fixing the incorrect tag usage in your model.

Unfortunately due to not using grouping and tags correctly, there’s a lot of merged geomety much of which makes no sense to me.

You should also be keeping your model cleaned up. There’s an awful lot of unused stuff in it.

Here’s the file with the tags fixed and the unused stuff purged. I set the background color to something so you can see where the holes are. It will be more work to fix the problems that it would be to redraw the cabinets and walls.

As gor what to group, it depends on what you need. I would model the walls first and make them a group or component. Then model the casework.make groups or components as you go. Depending on what you need from the model, you might want to model each cabinet box as a group or component, the countertop as another object, and so on.

Wow, thank you for this super thorough answer, DaveR. I am embarrassed about what a mess it is. I will start over and redraw the whole thing. In the meantime, for a bandaid fix, I have made the little rectangle and pasted it over. That worked well enough. I’ll review your guidance on making groups and tags. It’s my biggest weakness in sketchup.

The SketchUp Campus is a good place to learn.
