Cannot open previously used Layout since upgrading Sketchup Pro

I have a Mac OS X El Capitan with Sketchup Pro version 8 since 2012. I upgraded to Sketchup 2015 and since then I cannot open past files or use Layout.

did you try ‘Right Click’ >> ‘Open With’ >> ‘LayOut.app(15)’ on the .layout file in Finder?

SU v16 is the supported version for El Capitan, but some people still use v15, and it does open older version files…

it may give a warning that the file needs updating and it will then not open in v8, so you could make a copy first if that’s required…

you can keep more than one version of SU so can test v16 if all else fails…

I tried to upgrade my OS X El Capitan with an update Combo just now and it has made everything much slower and worse to use, thinking that it would access Layout. I could not find any rt click possibility as you suggested. I have deleted SU version 2015 as that was not helping either. I can use SU fine and I did see on the internet that there is a technical issue with Layout and OS X El Capitan.

can’t show a .layout on this mac, but I rt click on the .rb and the method works for all files…

I’m running the latest El Capitan without any v16 problems, but I don’t have a retina display or a Wacom Tablet…

if you have a v15 Pro licence, I would keep it installed or you loose it if/when you upgrade…

The choice I have when trying to open a previous Layout drawing is Layout (default), but when I open the file I cannot use it. This is the message that comes up: 'The document “Basic grid elevation” could not be opened. This file is from a newer version of LayOut (15.3.329) and is not compatible with this version.
This version of LayOut is 3.0.16845, use version 15.0.0 or higher to open this file.

So I am confused as when I upgraded to version 15 the trouble started. I have since deleted it but I still cannot open Layout.

the message implies you did open and save it in v15 at some point and it will no longer open in the older version…
it would have had a message like this for your version…

if you re-instal v15 you can do a Save As >> Version 3 if you need them back in that format…

if you open v8 LayOut.app directly from Finder does it open a new drawing?

When I try to open any drawing from Finder it opens but I cannot interact with it - it is dead to use. The problem with installing Version 15 was that I was always asked for a license and that would cost me about £90 if I remember correctly. I always thought it was free to upgrade.

Pro Upgrades were never free, but Updates within a version were…

the newish yearly maintenance plan can include a free Upgrade if it falls within the year from purchase…

you probably have two choices if you need the old files…

  1. have everything converted to v3 and hope they work on your system…
  2. buy an upgrade for v16, which will include 1 years maintenance and support…

John, I am pleased to say that i have now restored my Layout without any upgrades etc. I opened a past drawing and I noticed some crazy lines appearing but not where my pencil was pointing. I then saved it with three options available: 1) Layout document 2) Layout version 2 3) Layout version 1. I clicked the first one to save it. I then opened the same drawing and I found that I could draw on it in the normal way and delete the crazy stuff. It would appear that by saving the drawing I was enabling its access.

glad you got it working without too much pain…

I’d still recommend ‘testing’ v16 as it’s so much better…

just remember to work on copies of old stuff so they stay usable in SUv8 if you do…
