Can a group be push/pulled?

I’m trying to get to grips with SketchUp, week 1!

It seems that to create a robust design, everything must be either a group or a component. So, I thought, I’ll group all the shapes that make a profile before I pull it into a 3D object, because once the drawing gets complicated, it will be hard to select the 3D object to make it into a group later.

But it seems that a grouped profile cannot be pulled. Is this right? I HAVE to pull the ungrouped parts of a profile and then select all the parts it make a group? This seems very cumbersome.

Correct, you cannot pull a group. You can however double-click the group to edit it, then select a surface to pull.
