Cabinet section drawings

I’m still new to Sketchup and Layout and have been doing all my cabinet section work in Autocad.

Then inserting them into Layout. Is there a way to use Layout or Sketchup to do these?

Thanks

John

Yes there is. You can add sections to your SketchUp model and create scenes to show them. Then use those scenes for viewports in LayOut.

To me it makes more sense to keep it all in your SketchUp model. If you need to make any changes to the cabinet you only have to do it in one place. Chasing back and forth between SketchUp and AutoCAD is just make work.

Thanks Dave,

I’ve not had much success with sectioning so it looks like I’ve got some learning to do.

I’ve spent the last few years in Cabinet Vision and sectioning was a breeze. Sketchup has thrown me for a loop. It’s SketchUp and Cabinet Sense combined and I’m struggling. I’ll get it eventually, but it’s been a huge change so far.

Thanks

John

If you share a typical model or better, a LayOut file that shows the trouble you have with sections it would help us help you.

This is a quick example I made just now from an existing model.Just added a section cut for the drawer and created a scene. Then set up a viewport to use that scene.

Hi Dave,
Hopefully this will post.

It would help if you share the actual LayOut file. If your SketchUp model is built correctly there’s no reason you couldn’t make a section view like you show.

Side question: there seem to be a number of redundant dimensions and some conflicting ones. Is that standard process?

The cut section, I should have stated, is from Autocad that I did earlier. I agree that bouncing back and forth is a Pain. But the company I work for wants these types of section drawings. I just thought there has to be a way to do it in Sketchup.
I’ve been looking on the interweb for what others might be doing and it seems that they mostly are architectural sections of buildings.
My shop wants individual cabinets section views like the Autocad drawings.
Am I wrong in assuming that Sketchup will do drawings like that?
Thanks
John

No. You aren’t wrong. You can make views like that easily enough.

Of course you do see more section views with architectural models but the actual subject of the model makes no difference. You can use sections in any kind of model.

Obviously not elevation section views but sections are sections.

Hi Dave,
So each cabinet I want to do a section view has to be taken out of the elevation (or copied) and put somewhere else in the model, isolated in order to do that section? I think that’s probably a stupid question, but that’s what I’m seeing. Because I can’t double click on any cabinet and take it into an editing mode. All Cabinet Sense will allow is individual part adjustments, (that I know of at this time) not any views such as plan, elevation, end view section inside the cabinet.
Does that sound right or am I just not understanding?
Thanks
John

No. You don’t have to do that. I wouldn’t do that. I’d just put a section cut through the cabinet I want the section for. Anything between the camera and the section plane would automatically be hidden by the section cut. If you don’t want to see the cabinets behind the one with the section cut you can turn off their tags/tag folders.

Make a section cut though each cabinet and an associated scene if that does what you need.

I’ve never found any use for Cabinet Sense even for kitchens so I can’t direct you on that but you should be able to create the scenes you need to get the job done. If Cabinet Sense doesn’t let you control the views you create in the scenes, I’d say the extension is working against you, not for you.

I’ll start experimenting with that. I didn’t even think of the tags.
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my questions.
The cabinet and valve sections are very cool.
Thanks again
John

You’re welcome.

Do make sure you are using tags correctly. That is, all edges and faces remain untagged and tags are given only to groups and components.

Thank you!

BTW, If you want you can send me your LayOut and SketchUp files via a private message if you want a different set of eyes on them.

Thanks

John, since your asking specifically about sections for cabinets that resemble AutoCAD.
These are SketchUp and LayOut specifically.
Two different cabinets and two different treatments. 2D vs 3D details.

if you are interested in getting access to the 3D versions I am now selling detail libraries and a SketchUp template system that is built specifically for cabinet makers.

You are more than willing to take a look and see what might fit your system.

I love Cabinet Sense. We’ve been modeling millwork with it for over 3 years now. We are starting to use it for our CNC parts as well. Just FYI.

I have messed with the new (I think its new) Fredo sectioning extension. It pretty nice.

Thanks Ivan,
Haven’t heard of Fredo, I’ll have to look at it.

He posted about it on this forum with a video. Its available on sketchucation.
