I need to create and export an STL file for commercial printing. Can someone advise re the best export options from Sketchup ? I’m a complete newbie to this but what I’m going to print has a lot of detail, will have to be broken up into parts and scale tolerances are critical. For me though all I need is a great STL file to pass on.
There are 2 ways I know of to make STL files for 3D printing with SketchUp.
-
Classic method: install the STL plugin from the Extension Warehouse (Extension | SketchUp Extension Warehouse). This will allow you to import/export STL files directly from SketchUp, but it will not fix any issues you may have in the design.
-
New method: you can upload your SketchUp model to the 3D Warehouse and check the “I want this to be 3D Printable” box, and the SketchUp model will be sent to Materialize. Materialize will do their best to fix any issues and then return a STL file for you to download and 3D Print (and it happens pretty quickly).
