Autosave not autosaving

I remember being as deep in the tabs as “Preferences”… turns out it was one step deeper only… but this time more tabs on the left…
thanks @dezmo

This path is all You can find on internet about new sKetchup autosave files… along with information that autosave is saved only when sKetchup exits abnormally.
I’ve been there… autosaves were not…
To be exact I was working with two files at the moment… one as material and composite sample from which I was copying… sKetchup model on which I was working crushed. I didn’t need to copy anything from the sample file so I just used that open sKetchup to open the model that crushed… I guess this was my mistake since this particular “instance” of sKetchup had not crushed so it didn’t see the autosave (somehow?). Which is strange anyway cos it was suppose to be left there since sKetchup crushed (another yes but still it crushed)…

So maybe it is issue with what exactly erases autosave files? Maybe abnormality of exit is not defined when many models are open and at least one remains working propelly? I don’t know… except that files were not there… what is their naming conception ? still autosave_model_name.skp ? or it changed as well… except for backup file there were other two *.tmp files (icon was promising but no success opening it )

As YOU @colin suggested I took a sneak pick into that folder while working… open long time with autosave set up for 8mins… with buck up enabled and then disabled… no files are coming and going…

I’m on sKetchup 19.3.253 64-bit … trial… (my office still doesn’t want to update our 2016, even though they bought ENScape which is not officially supporting 2016 sKetchup…)

I just save manually now and then (habit from photoshop)… no big dill… still an issue

When I am testing auto save I set it to 1 minute. Also, remember not to Save during the test.

I wonder if you might have permissions issues with that folder. See if you are able to copy a file into it.

I can copy and delete… Autosave to 1 min
there are not autosaves. I enabled recovery file again… and the file named temp.skp (which is the same with model I am working on) started to update every few minutes even if I am not saving the file… It is suppose to be backup file so it suppose to update only when I save… wright?

When you save, the previous saved file is renamed to be temp.skb, in your example, and a new temp.skp is written. So, the skp is the last save you did, and the skb is the previous save you did. It will be in the same folder as the original.

The auto save file will have the same name as the original, and will be called temp.skp, in your example. It will update every minute, even if you are not saving.

So, what you were watching was the auto save file, which means it’s working.

Which means It seems to be working but When I opened file from my directory it gave me an option to open a recovery file even though it was suppose to have newer autosave… And I guess autosave was deleted as soon as I decided to open that recovery file… ? when exactly autosave is deleted when sKetchup crashes and then You open again the same model and don’t use that autosave…? it is when sKetchup tries to create another autosave I guess… So if I chose to open recovery file and was looking for the location of Recovery Files folder and it took me more time than was set up for creating an outosave, then the autosave which I was looking for would be overwritten.
And because I opened the file form another sKetchup which was working doring that crush it didn’t know to check out for autosave only checked recovery if it is newer…
it is still an issue… You should check for autosaves always since it is only one location and only one file name we are looking for…

The auto save file is the recovery file. When you are given a choice of opening the original file or the more recent recovery file, it’s getting the file from:

%LocalAppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 2019\SketchUp\working\SKETCHUP\RecoveredFiles

Auto save doesn’t make a series of versions of the file, it only updates a single file.

Well then it wasn’t 10 mins but over 40 in that case… there were *.tmp files which had an icon and time modified like autosave I was looking for were suppose to have… Is there a reason why those .tmp files would not finalize into autosave? I mean I’m guessing this were temporary files when creating an autosave… they still there…

You would run out of storage in no time. The Autosave comes from the time before cloud storage. It only saves the last when something goes bad.
If you want version history, you can use Trimble connect and ‘publish’ all versions.

I understand why not every autosave is saved… I was saying that instead of autosave file in the SKETCHUP\RecoveredFiles folder I had two *.tmp files with size matching my model and “date modified” 10 mins apart… and they were not anymore temporary since they did not get erased… sKetchup intended to do autosave and errored somewhere on the way…
Funny it comes to me so late… but I can actually recall now having twice error messages from sKetchup… I didn’t read them… First I thought it is crushing so just clicked OK and nothing happened… so I continued my work… second time the same… and I guess 3 time it really crushed with no warning…
This could be messages about not being able to create an autosave…

Anyways thanks all. I learned quite a bit… will be aware more in future…
