Anyone using SketchUp to export models to Revit as point cloud models?

I’m exploring the possibilities for providing professional models from point cloud scans, but I need to provide Revit models from my SketchUp model. This can be done using .ifc export. The requirements for such models are that they need to have perfect solid integrity for the purposes of Revit.

In terms of wall massing this is totally feasible, but I’m not as confident about parametric windows and doors being totally Revit compatible. Does anyone have experience with this kind of modeling?

It might be non-feasible but it’s worth exploring.

Any tips or feedback would be very much appreciated.

I have used both Scan Essentials and Undet to deliver SketchUp models from e57 point clouds … and I regularly deliver SketchUp models from point clouds for a wide variety of clients. And I much prefer the Undet toolset over Trimble Scan Essentials. Having said that … there is nothing automatic about the process.
In my experience, the accuracy/usefulness of the finished model is much more dependent on the specifics of the scanner used (the technology/type of the scanner itself) and the expertise/experience of the people who are onsite doing the scan.
One guy I know who has a good handle on scanning, point clouds, SketchUp and Revit is Marius Putrimas. But since he works for TerraModus (the company that markets the Undet toolset) I suspect he may be a bit biased toward Undet. Regardless, he is well regarded in the field.
Another guy I know who has a good grasp on how all this relates back to Revit is Silviu Stoian. Unfortunately I don’t think he is particularly conversant in SketchUp.
Nevertheless, both of these guys regularly post on LinkedIn … so even if you never contact either one directly … you can probably learn a great deal about going from point clouds to Revit just by perusing their LinkedIn posts.

Practically the only way to get a workable Revit model is to model it in Revit. Round-tripping between applications has a very limited usability.

Thanks Anssi,

I get you: SketchUp isn’t going to produce any parametric Revit objects no matter what fancy data you add to the model.

However, all I require from the process is a static survey model that is usable within Revit for a user who only needs it as a reference.

Does that make sense?

We are receiving strange Sketchup model builds from survey companies that are offering , dwg. Point cloud. .rvt and skp. The Skp versions are not formed/ organised properly as i expected. I have recieved good rvt from some users so.im investigating this because its strangr and to realise there is a considerable tidy up job ahead, it may be user skills of the originator.

I will soon be testing 2025 Revit for any oddities
