Another complaint

Maybe it’s just because I’m French and it’s commonly accepted that we like to complain, but I really feel the need to post again, as an open letter, here we go :

What is happening with SketchUp? I don’t quite understand. It’s an amazing software – amazing for its simplicity, amazing for its freedom.

The first time I “touched” 3D, in a field that wasn’t yet mine, was through Architrion, which was, I believe, published by Canadians.
One could gauge the thickness of its accompanying manual to understand that, perhaps, the “traditional” methods would have been better suited, at that time.

After exploring many other solutions over the years, what a relief and magic I felt when I discovered SketchUp!
Everything seemed obvious, settled, intuitive. Simple! Just simple. And yet so complex at the same time.

It is precisely because it is based on an astonishing simplicity that the slightest issue in its basic functionality can have disastrous consequences.
I don’t understand how you can ignore problems affecting the majority of users while developing trivial innovations that are just trendy.
I repeat, anything built on faulty foundations cannot succeed.

All the little annoyances, like the transparent golden texture that hasn’t worked for several versions, might seem trivial when considered alone, but when put together, the product loses all credibility. I’m not going to list them all – that’s not my job.
Please, change your development approach. As customers, we lose trust when, despite numerous testimonials and reports, no regular follow-up is made, unless we measure by years, and no viable solutions are implemented.

It was your own promise to ensure more frequent updates once the subscription system was in place, yet I see the complete opposite happening.
We are working with an unstable tool, fueled by hundreds or thousands of hours of third-party developers who keep it alive. Out of respect for them and all sketchup users, make sure that the basic features work as expected.

This is not a complaint, it is a refined critique! :baguette_bread::croissant: :wine_glass::tokyo_tower:

This is weird to me - referencing a bunch of issues you have with the program without saying what they are. How do you expect them to fix or change anything based on this feedback?

Which basic features? When is the program unstable for you? I’m not saying you’re not having issues, but it’s pretty much impossible to do ANYTHING based on vague feedback like this (other than fix the gold texture I guess)

Oh I could (re)list a few of them if you’d like, scrolling not working in trays, photomatch totally broken with new engine, video export broken with new engine, inference absurdities…
I’ve reported this many times already, it was shots in the dark
That is not the point of my post anyway, I’m really upset there is no work whatsoever made to fix an ill software and its reputation is going to keep falling

Paul,

About inferencing – I checked out those two gifs you made in the July 2024 post and tried to replicate it in 2024 and 2023.

Certainly in my 2024 the inferencing was no way as bad as you show in your 2024 gif.

But that’s not to say that I’ve noticed any degradation of inferencing between 2022 through to 2024. If there has been; it’s been subtle.

And I’m not experiencing any issue with scrolling in trays…

Hello,

I know exactly what he’s referring to. The multi-tray scrolling is, I wouldn’t call it “broken” per se, but it’s definitely acting very 1991ish. There’s not context sharing between the scrollbars - an empty scrollbar “friction locks” the rest, unless you explicitly move the cursor to the meta scrollbar.

It’s hard to explain because it’s more of a UI/UX moment, but it’s definitely there and it’s definitely annoying.

My solution is to have like 5 trays scattered around the 3rd monitor, so there are no scrollbars. #shrug

ok – I think I understand.

I have separate trays for each of the dialog boxes that I frequently use so it’s unlikely that I would have experienced this.
