3D Warehouse Users Needed!

I think the biggest obstacle to the development of 3D Warehouse is the declaration and protection of the copyright of the models. The model library would be much better developed if the information about the author of the model was known and could generate some revenue, like the plugin library.

The above is translated through a translator and may be incorrect.

There are already many sites selling 3D models. Many items for sale are in fact taken from the 3D Warehouse. And people post to the Warehouse items they have downloaded from elsewhere, with or without modifications.
The Warehouse is too big for that. No one has the capability of policing the content. There are already many duplicate models re-posted by others than the original creators. Who would be responsible for the quality? Refunds as required by consumer law? It is a can of worms.

This is what we are trying to solve with the 3D Bazaar: Introducing 3D Bazaar

For now it is only open to a few select vendors, but we plan to open it to everyone with strict guidelines and a review process.

Hi Kelly,

I do… Or I did a lot but unfortunaley I cant get in to it any more.
SkeychUp Make 2017.

I received the email and started exploring it already. It seems nicely done. Exactly what I was thinking of.

Good luck with it and I hope that’s a good bet as your work is great and you deserve it.

Help. Haven’t been able to access from inside sketchup a not secure issue if forward

Hi Kelly,

I would like that 3D models available at Collada format don’t include edges anymore like in the past.
If it’s not possible, could you explain at least why such a choice was decided?
See also Why are all Collada models with edges in 3D Warehouse?

Thanks from Sweet Home 3D users

I’d be happy to offer up some thoughts.
I’m a landscape designer so mostly focussed on plants/ outside objects

Plants are a very good example of the issues detailed above regarding polygon count. The recent 3DBazaar plugin is a good example of premium models created correctly having real value and worth, an interesting shop window that I am sure many will use. Having used 3DW and other sites for plant objects its obvious that many plants are converts from 3DSMax files - described as Low poly but not by anyone who uses SU. I also suspect that there is Piracy involved as many of the plants that look good are because they are converted from objects that you have to pay for on EverMotion, fine if the authors offer them in 3DW free but the same plants pop up attributed to numerous authors, so it feels like they are less than honest postings.
I also have frustrations with the navigation in 3DW.
Practical difference between folders and collections? When pulling objects from my folders I have to navigate back from my homepage to another folder which frustrates me… unless I’ve just been stupid for the last year?
The search function doesn’t have any logic… I can type something and the results are less than impressive sometimes, whereas the best results come from find a good model, even if its completely unrelated and clicking on the author, to reveal a whole cabinet of stuff that’s really nice but simply never appears in a search by normal means.
I’ve also noticed that, for me, the access to 3DW is a buggy at the moment as I get a text page without graphics perhaps 50% of the time…
Overall its an incredible asset.

If I am not mistaken much of the “Search Engine” confusion lies with the OP of the model and not filling out the “Description” or “Title” correctly for the search engine to take advantage of.
Perfect example is this thread below where the teacher was trying to find the model the student used and claimed as her own:
https://forums.sketchup.com/t/student-turned-in-model-from-warehouse-instead-of-their-own-work/158996
The house he was looking for isn’t even listed as a house but is found under “Solar 7 - Massachusetts Institute of Technology”?
So in the end if the OP of the model doesn’t even “TAG” the model correctly? You are going to have all kind of variables popping up in your search. Not sure if there is a way to police that either and I would not even know where to start. I just keep entering different descriptions until something comes close…or even if I get desperate I will run a “Google” search with “SketchUp” in the description to find different model…
Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess…

The problem with the 3DWarehouse is poor model quality.

  • Many people upload just simple models or even 2D shapes with nice looking textures.
  • Many models are just useless (for example simple texturized buildings from google maps etc.) It takes more time to download such a model than to build it yourself.
  • Models should have simple information like tags etc) that they are created in metric or imperial system - It is important.
  • Models should have information that they are created via building from “scratch” or are a result of some conversion.
(Conversions creates many bugs and random planes)
  • It would be great to create few important, ennobling folders - like for example “Classical architecture details”.(Advanced users would be pleased to share their complicated models with others in a speciall separate, certified category.)
  • Sketchup also should make some efforts to source more manufacturers models. Especially the metric models from Europe.
  • Sketchup could also think about some models competitions (for example one a year, in various categories) - this would increase the rank and the quality of the models.
This is not a matter of the complexity of the model, but of its importance.
  • Maybe at least, providing the necessity of leaving rates to the model downloaded from the Warehouse could be helpful in creating some reliable ranking.
If You download the model, please rate this after - help other people to save the time!
Many people may disagree with me, but it is in my interest that 3Dwarehouse was a source of creative, reliable and high-quality models.
I’ve been working on sketchup almost from the beginning … testing the first plugins as a user and going all the way. SKetchup has many disadvantages, but it’s a great app for real designers.
    Best regards, greetings to all

Dear Kelly,
In addition to what dear users mentioned, it would be nice if a : ( all surfaces area/ model size) ratio will be noted on the 3DWH models. Making filtering for the same category more efficient in term of level of details .

I agree that the 3D Warehouse is a mixed bag of quality, but I don’t agree with some of these ideas.

Simple textured buildings are often very use-full as background or accompanying entourage for urban settings. If I want to include the Transamerica Pyramid in the distant background of a San Francisco architectural scene it’s very nice to have access to a quick lo-poly textured version. Same goes for many iconic buildings in other cities around the world, it’s a great way to give your model context.

I can’t think of why the units used in the modeling of the item is important. What does it matter if I am 6’2" or 188cm? What matters is that the item is the correct size, the units will be set by me for my model.

There is already a provision for giving likes in the warehouse, and there is a section for comments. I think I would find it annoying to have my workflow interrupted by being required to rate a model every time I download one.

I’m very glad to see that Trimble is looking into the 3D Warehouse to see if things can be improved! I’d be happy to help in any way I can.

I think it’s clear that some things that are a problem to some, turn out to be just what someone else is looking for, so perhaps a way of sorting or filtering, in the search feature, is a way to have people arrive at the type of model they are looking for.

There is no question that there is piracy. I was surprised and shocked to see my lamp also available from two other users! I didn’t have time to pursue this, to see if other models had been stolen, but now that I read some people sell them, I wonder if my work is enriching someone else! I’m not charging for my few contributions to the warehouse – I loved the very idea that everyone was creating and sharing their content.

My only problem, other than occasionally finding a flimsy and poorly designed model, is that many have an origin nowhere near the actual model! You download it into your drawing, and have to click on Zoom Extents to find it! I’m not sure if this is fixable. Also, some models come with all kinds of other things attached to them, sometimes also far away, so you may not even be aware there’s another object somewhere!

I like that there are products, but would like 3DW to open to all models. I’m willing to search for what I need, but understand busy people may need a way to get either low poly or high poly models, so it would be nice if there was a way for them to specify this in their search. I wouldn’t like to see the warehouse to become so restrictive and cumbersome to add content that people would hesitate to contribute. For me, dimensions are always important so I try to have that information in my description, and always appreciate when others do the same.

I hope all improvements considered for 3DW will not be limiting content in most ways. It seems that no matter what is useless to some, it is very useful for others, so lets keep it an open market!

Thank you for the opportunity to speak on the subject.

I understand that unit vary across the community but I find it quite tedious when browsing the warehouse that I cannot determine the size of the item that I am downloading. This is rather arbitrary in most cases, but trying to use the 3DW for kitchen. If somebody took the time to draw a cabinet or a fridge or range, I have having to download 20 of them to find one that meets my dimensions.

Dimensions of an object are generally easy to change once downloaded. It would be impractical to have many slightly different dimensioned versions of every item, or to post ever dimension of every item. If you do not know how or are unwilling to change the dimensions of the item using SketchUp perhaps you could check out live components on the warehouse which are configurable to specific dimensions via warehouse interface.

Hi Kelly, you may contact me if needed.

Which brings up another contradiction.
Usually “Unit of Measure are inches”, but you can only configure it in millimetres …

For example:

Hey
I think that it would make things easier if when you search for something, it automatically opens ‘models’, not ‘products’
Not sure if there’s a reason for that
