2019.2 Layout text

Hi Michael.
Thanks for taking the time out to respond and help. Your process was much like mine - Copy from AutoCAD into a column and then cut/paste into other resized columns to suit the layout. Similar reasons with my multiple columns to yours in that there’s the absense of a multiple column feature similar to AutoCAD or InDesign. The total sheet set for this project was 45pages although there were only 4-6 pages early on with the majority of notes. Reformatting takes some time with odd linespacing or sentences stopped short on one line before continuing on another. Can’t say as any fault here lies with Layout as I’m not sure how the text was originally entered.
I haven’t tried ‘Avenir’ as a font choice but can attest that there was a serious Lag when using Arial that was virtually eliminated by trialling with Calibri.
What would be your average final file size (mb) or page numbers for your projects in Layout.
Thanks again for the input.

Hi @craigcampbell66,

Sorry for the delayed response. I had to look up a couple of recent LayOut files. I have a 122MB LO file with eleven 11x17 sheets that exported within a few minutes. It was a concept drawing so heavy on graphics and light on text (ie short descriptions and call-outs only; no full page of specification sheets).

I have another 31MB file that is also concept only that is eight 11x17 sheets and it took six hours to export two of the sheets so I had to do a workaround.

Contrast with our CD template that is 19 ARCH D (24x36) sheets, five of which are full page of text for specifications (soon to be six) and it exports in two seconds. Keep in mind that is a template so no SU drawing attached, hence no viewports to render. I hold it up as an example though since your original post was about difficulty with fonts slowing down your drawing.

When we were developing our brand, we went with Avenir because it was clean, easy to read and Arial and Helvetica were so overused. It was also available in our favorite apps as well as Canva. It was mostly a stylistic choice rather than a practical one but I really like it.

I hope you get your text issue resolved soon!

It sounds like your 6 hour render of pages may have been using vector or Hybrid mode for the viewpoints or had the Hybrid override turned on under Doc settings before Trimble reversed it to be ‘off’ by default. I find on any work i do thats heavy in either vegetation (3D) or organic /curved or finely detailed geometry, i leave the viewports in raster but with min lineweight set to 0.1 or 0.2 pts. Very much a sliding scale and case by case call, but seems to work.

Thanks again for your input. Much appreciated.
