Will an HP Spectre 4K i5 8gig ram be good for basic SketchUp?

I am thinking of getting this HP Spectre instead of a Surface Pro 7 i5, 8gig ram, so that I can learn SkechUP. i5 10th gen, iris plus graphics 8 ram, 4K screen. Have never used SketchUp before. Is this realistic? If not for SkechUp, I would rather have the surface for the build, even though I prefer the 4K screen. HP Spectre specs posted below. THANKS!

The general spec is fine, but built in graphics aren’t recommended for SketchUp. It will probably work, but Windows Update has a habit of updating the graphics driver and breaking some critical part of OpenGL that SU relies on.

If you can, get a laptop with an nVidia graphics card.

You should also get a 3-button scroll wheel mouse - almost any will do, but Logitech ones are often recommended. SU works best with a scroll wheel mouse.

And for working at a desk, a bigger external monitor will be more comfortable, unless your eyesight is very sharp indeed - you won’t be short of pixels on the laptop screen, but things will be very small. SU doesn’t work reliably with more than 150% scaling up in Windows.

Wow. Thanks for this great advice. Very helpful. I will have to budget for discrete graphics & a recommended magnification of less than 150% or use SketchUp with an external monitor… Regarding the specs, would a 128 SSD work as well?

Depends what else you are using the laptop for. Windows itself takes a big chunk out of 128gb (maybe 40gb?) I’d go for a 240-256gb SSD myself. They aren’t that much more expensive these days. And you can get an external HDD with a big capacity for peanuts (relatively speaking) these days. USB3 or USBC is nearly as fast as an internal one. You can add it later if you don’t need it yet.
