SketchUp Pro 23.0.418 running on iMac with Sonoma 14.7.
All of a sudden I can’t print from SketchUp. I have a SketchUp file (attached) and I simply want to print out the cut diagrams for the sheet goods (6 of them, some dimensioned for rough cut). I set up the Page Setup for my printer (Cannon G6000), Paper (US letter), Orientation (Landscape), Scaling (100%). I zoom the view in to each sheet on the drawing and go to Print. Previously, ( a few months ago), the print window would show what’s going to print and all was good. I’d print each desired view and go off to my shop to cut.
However, today when I tried it, the print window shows nothing even though everything is set up as before. I even tried going to PDF and again nothing. I finally had to use my screen grab app and print from there, so I know my printer is working.
So what’s changed on your computer? It wasn’t SketchUp 2023. That hasn’t changed in about 12 months. So operating system update? Maybe it’s graphics driver related? Print drivers? Printer choice?
I set the camera to Parallel Projection and this is what Print Preview shows. Of course this is in SketchUp 2024 and on Windows.
Off Topic: You should consider flipping components like the door stiles rather than rotating them end for end. That’ll make resizing the doors easier so you can easily make all the doors by starting with your first one. Your door on the left here.
Dave,
I don’t recall exactly but there may have been an update to Sonoma in the last couple of months but I’ve never had problems with my printer before.
I tried switching to Parallel projection and still no go. Then I thought, let’s see what happens when I send the whole file to Layout, no viewports or any massaging. I pulled up the print window and lo and behold, there was the expected image in the print window. That kinda tells me there is something awash with SketchUp.
Why don’t I use Layout? Because its a hassle to get it set up just right. If I used SketchUp on a regular basis over a period of time I might be more adept at remembering all the little tricks needed to effectively integrate it with Layout, but I don’t use it regularly. I use SketchUp for a few weeks every 6 months or so and I tend to forget the operational details. Anyway, making my shop drawings directly from SketchUp works fine, if. . . .I can print them.
Sorry but I don’t quite follow what you are doing with the flipping versus rotating. I haven’t really had a problem re-sizing my door components. But I tell ya, I really like the improvement they made on the flip tool. I don’t know how many times I did a trial and error withe the old flip command. The colored planes really make it intuitive.
ateliernab,
I tried zooming on one panel, then export to 2d pdf. Lousy result, I got much better results using my screen grab app (snagit version 3.3.7) and until I figure this out I guess that’s what I’ll have to use.
I did a little more digging and found out that up until 9/22/24 I was running Sonoma 14.6.1. Then the 14.7 update was installed. In early Sept (9/2/24) I printed a SketchUp file for a small bench I was building and that concides with being under 14.6.1. Just to check, I tried a print of that same bench today and no go, the print preview shows nothing. So now I gotta figure out what happened between Sonoma 14.6.1 and 14.7 that killed the ability to print a SketchUp file directly. Right now it’s a mystery without any clues.
Followup -
item 1 (print issue). I contacted SketchUp support and they were very responsive (all app support should be that good). I was using an early release of SketchUp 2023 and wanted to fix the issue there but the support guy suggested I upgrade to SketchUp 2024 since that early release of SketchUp 2023 was no longer available. So I bit the bullet and got a clean install of SkecthUp 2024. That solved the issue so I’m once again “good to go”.
Item 2 (Dave suggestion of using flip versus rotate). At first I didn’t quite understand what he was saying but I figured it out and just tried his method. Works great so I’ll be using more of the flip tool when I need to make mirror-image parts, like in my cabinet doors. Thx Dave
FWIW, in nearly every piece of furniture or cabinet work there will be left and right or front and back or top and bottom counterparts. Identical but mirrored. Flip will be the right way to make the the counterpart from the first.
