When is something considered a solid

I am trying to use the subtract tool and i keep getting a message saying the part is not a solid. do i have to group, make a component or other?

You need to have groups or components that SketchUp indicates are solid. In simple terms a solid is a component or a group in which every edge is share with exactly two faces. No more and no less. So no stray edges, no holes in surfaces, and no internal faces.
