Greetings!
I’m a retired IT engineer and plan to be using Sketchup to design woodworking projects. I’m currently using the 2017 desktop product with the Cutlist extension.

I’m a beginner with this software, but have been making progress via some good youtube videos.

Hi,

I’m Paul, and I’ve been learning and using SketchUp for a few months.
I started out with a free trial of the pro version, but then got busy and didn’t have time to try it out before it expired,

I use it mostly for fun, but recently we have been working with an architect and builder to see if we can build a house. I have used it to create simple 3D renderings of our ideas so that the architects could build it in their CAD program, Fun!

I used to use TurboCAD until it want 3D and got too complicated. I used it to create plan drawings for work projects and to build a little meditation studio called the “Love Shack”. I wish sketchup had been around back then, but having to draw each and every component to scale helped me to understand how to build it, and it turned out really nice.

I am obviously brand new to this forum, so I don’t know yet how to post any of my projects so you can see all my mistakes, but give me a minute and maybe I’ll figure it out!

Happy to be here because sometimes SketchUP does things that I simply don’t understand. I’m hoping to learn more about the program before deciding to upgrade to the paid version. It’s kind of addicting, as I’ve seen happen with SIMS, but with this, I can design REAL LIFE plans!

Ok, I think that’s enough for now. Happy to have found the forum from the Instagram streaming events.

Cheers,
Paul

p.s. found the upload button, Here is any most recent house plans, and I’ll see if I can find a picture of the “Love Shack” as well.

Based on your experience, I would say none less than a SketchUp Pro subscription would make sense, especially if you intend to do commercial work. You theoretically could get away with SketchUp Make 2017 if you want to use extensions but don’t want to pay anything or do any commercial work with it.

Hi. I’m just getting back into using sketchup after a few years off. I last used sketchup 8 with a few plugins to design 3D ACW model ship paper/card models.
I am buying a 3D printer and want to use sketchup to design things for that including model ships, buildings and the odd vehicle. I’ve placed an order for a new laptop and will be going for sketchup pro I think as I want to be able to use an offline version rather than just online.
I am interested to see what has changed since my version 8. I’m hoping some of the adds on I used are either included now or I can still get them e.g. curviloft. I will have to work out how to install the plugins again. Hopefully as I do things it will all come back, but I expect I will have to watch a few videos and read some threads here to get reskilled again!

If you are using SketchUp for non-commercial purposes, you can use SketchUp Make 2017. It’s free.

Thankyou for the helpful replies. I really want to design off line and use the plugins etc so PRO was my only options although having to pay £230 for a commercial licence even though it’s not for commercial use hurt, especially as it’s only for a year’s use. I then realised I have to pay VAT on top of that so although I love sketchup I can’t afford that every year. A one of payment, maybe but that is just a crazy price. I then looked at bringing my sketchup 8 across from my old computer but realised I don’t have the installation file any more and when I click on the help tab all the licence info is greyed out so I can’t install it even if I could get the installation file!
I think I will try the 2017 Make version as it seems to accept plugins so should do what I need. I hope that the future brings a more reasonably priced version for home users as it would be a shame to have to stop using sketchup. I miss the ‘good old days’ wjere you payed up front for a computer program rather than an annual licence.
Thanks again all, and sorry to sound like a cheap skate.

Make 2017 ís the version for home/hobby users who want to use extensions (formerly known as plugins) or just want a desktop version or don’t like the online Sketchup Free interface…
It only lacks the PRO features like solid tools and import options like DWG/DXF.
And it doen’t come with Layout either.
If You had Sketchup 8 PRO and want to use the PRO features, You can start a new topic and ask for the installer, maybe someone has it…
Happy SketchUpping an 3D-printing!

Thanks  I’ve installed 2017 and some plugins, I mean extensions. I’m assuming there will be some improvements on my version 8 which I think was 2010. I don’t think my version 8 was ‘pro’ so I think I will be happy with the 2017 version. I think it will give me all I need for now. Thanks again and now I just have to work out how all the features work again! Luckily there is a lot of help online and youtube nowadays too!

I find myself wondering why I never respond to forums? Although, I’m an avid reader of all types of online sharing mediums, from every type of web-site; coding, self study, DIY, to similarly useful news groups and RSS feeds, including the long since logged into Delphi dial-up internet access back in 1992. At some point early on, I became jaded by the disparaging ways in which online pima-donnas (elites) most often, obviously frustrated by newbie questions, responded to these amateurs’ posts. I find the same mal-mannered communication styles on today’s social media ad infinitum. At the same time, the cause of the frustration on the part of the knowledge sharers were indeed sometimes (most often) warranted for the context of the inquiries received repeatedly, and too often, by their benefactors. My apprehension to share thoughts, questions or ideas in the virtual world should be obvious, if you’ve managed to follow me thus far.

In fact, I’ve been on this site reading many times, not to mention scores of other forums as well. I started using Sketchup back when it was first released for free by Google when it was obtained from the development team of @last Software. I’d always wanted to have the use of a real 3D design tool on the PC, but had to settle for other fairly good offerings purchased for about $200 at the old Price Club. I don’t remember the name of the software, but I needed it for approvals on personal remodel and design projects. The technology back then, although state of the are, was so far behind todays standards. The more the hardware improved, without further capital investment in the software, the old software became more and more inadequate. Sketchup free from Google was a blessing for my financial situation.

Of course, that’s always going to be the way things are, life doesn’t always provide the extra capital needed for “other endeavors.” Which brings me to why I stopped using SketchUp when they moved to the subscription licensing model, including the online no-cost limited features offering. I kept trying to use older version of the tool, but I ran into too many obstacle. So, finally, twenty years later, despite not getting over my objections to the subscription licensing scheme, the other day I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a SketchUp Pro license. So, here I am, responding to the “Please introduce yourself” post on the forum. I’ll follow the obligatory Q&A and tell you who I am.

Welcome @dcbuller! The SketchUp forum is not perfect, we’re all human beings after all, but I think you will find the general tone impressively civil compared to many other online public spaces. A sincere, clearly asked question almost invariably receives a kind helpful answer very quickly here.

The Google Photos link didn’t work out. I think that as a newly signed up poster you can still add an image. You could drag the Me and Moses image to your desktop from Google Photos, then drag the image into a reply here.

Hello,

A few years ago I have create the plans of my house after dowloading Sketchup on my computer. Today I discover the web version.
I’m french, please could someone where I can read and post on the french part of this forum ? Cause I did not find it…

Thanks

If you are still having issues with this, make a new post in the Sketchup section of the forum.

There is no French area of the forum. But if you post a new topic in French there are many here who speak French and Google translate as well.
