Welcome to our forums! Please introduce yourself :)

Hello to the forum…
I’m Tom and am in systems engineering (not IT!)…
I have used SketchUp to make tent plans, garage layout plans and, recently, portable radio equipment frames…
I use sketchup because I don’t have visio…frankly at this point I can find nothing good about it only perhaps its free…to me its a frustration generator that lacks intuitiveness…I can be much more productive with PowerPoint but am trying to pick this up…just wasted an hour trying to generate/arrange a dozen 1/2" dia short pvc pipes…hence the visit…
So I guess I’m a beginner…
3DBasecamp? sounds like a Garmin app
Currently using an older laptop with a larger screen…
3D warehouse? is that another big-box store?
Favorite Emoji? sounds like over-priced coffee from some far off land
I’m sure to those folks who have modeling backgrounds its a great tool that’s easy to pickup and, by the looks of some of the examples shown, quite powerful.
Will have to give the tutorials an honest go…
thanks

Welcome to SketchUp Community — thanks for contributing!

I think you’ll find SketchUp to be easy to grasp, probably more so than any competing CAD software…give it a chance and take note of how your modeling skills will advance in the coming weeks and months.

One of the fastest and most effective ways to get up to speed with SU is to view the ictutorialvideos provided by the SU Team or the introductory videos on YouTube… Click the bold type to be taken to the linked videos. There are many others so if you search for them and study those that appeal to you, you will be modeling like a pro in little time. Be patient and take a shot!

Hi, I’m Tom Dullage, I live in Lancashire, UK and am a retired operations engineer, having worked in nuclear power stations for many years. My main hobbies are photography and woodwork, both steep learning curves. I’ve just downloaded Sketchup Make, in the hope of producing plans for wooden toys, which I make primarily for my grandchildren.
I am new to this type of program, so a complete beginner, who will, no doubt, have lots of questions!

Hello all, im Tommaso Gomez, im new.
Thank to this forum and all of you to share your skills to help other people and make better work.
Im 53 yo, working as a art director in animation studio in italy. Im a set designer, concept artist and ive learned SkUp by myself, from 5/6 years.
I have integrated this sw in the studio workflow not without negateve suspct fro other collegues, IT, etc. you know that animation is a great field that grow a lot, changing from 2d to 3d. I was, a designer, im a designer, and sketching and drawing all the times, SkUp, give me the same feelings as when i draw…startinfg from a rough defining step by step, and finishin it as a model…
This kind of work is been a great succes that have got a great implementation in my job. Is very usefull for storyboard artist, and model artist.
For example who, as me, not have maya skills, usuing SkUp is a great help to discuss with the artist that model my idea. Often a model artist not have drawing skillsand can be hard to explain some details or a shape.
Often i export my model and the artist copy from it and define details
Often storyboard artist use my renderingd also in screenshot, to choose the better layout for the scene. And sometime a short animation explain the whole environment better than a lot of drawings. I do my experience by myself, now i want upgrade my skills.
Your help will be appeciated
Thank for reading

Hello Everyone,

I’m Jodie Davis from Hickory Flat, Georgia. I design cuckoo clocks and have them made at the Anton Schneider factory in the Black Forest.

Years ago I fell in love with the clocks made in the 60’s and 70’s. That, of course, made me want to design my own. So I did. My vision for my business is tor reinvent cuckoo clocks for today. Same beautiful craftsmanship, but clocks of lasting design that reflect or passions and fit in our homes.

My first three models were developed in Germany from my sketches. While I’ve played with Sketchup in the past, I now have a purpose: I’m setting about to create finished, working prototypes of my clocks myself, with production in mind.

I’m looking forward to being part of the community and learning a lot!

Who are you, who, who?

My name is Jasper Coolen

What is your industry and profession?

I have my own company in sound, light, stages etc,

Where do you use SketchUp? Personally/professionally?

a few times pe ryear I use sketchup for this, but for the more complex drawnings, I use other programs. Because somehow when importing autocad files to sketchup, it messes the files up. For now I am usuing it for the redesign of a house I want to buy.

Why do you use SketchUp and what is your favorite thing about it?

Because it is free, and there is more free information on the internet.

How proficient are you in SketchUp? Beginner, intermediate, advanced?

Beginner

Have you gone to a SketchUp 3DBasecamp?

No I had to use Duck Duck go, to find out what it was.

What is your current set up? Computer type, SketchUp version…etc.573

Selfbuild pc, sketchup 2015 make

Do you have a 3D Warehouse page with your models, Extensions, or a website you would like to link to or show off to us?

No did not even know that this excisted.

Anything else you would like to tell us? (e.g., you once saw a UFO & tried to model it in SketchUp to get a prototype 3D printed…)

No not realy, if I forgot anything, please ask me.

What is your favorite Emoji?

I only use ;-), to show that something was a joke. Sometimes I use  and ;-(. Thats all I know, I have to look on the internett for others.

Do you enjoy long walks on the beach…?

My house is less then 5 minutes from the beach, I love it.

Make sure that you are using a recent version of the AMD graphics driver, and that SketchUp is set to use the Radeon card (application preferences on the Radeon control panel).

Hi. My name is Rik Owens.

What is your industry and profession? - I am a Real Estate professional in Phoenix, AZ.

Where do you use SketchUp? Personally/professionally? - Both! Part of my business is flipping houses for myself, or for investors. When I begin a renovation project, I use SketchUp to draw the current floor plan of a home, and then the fun begins! With SketchUp I can easily produce several options for a new floor plan and remodel. People always ask me how I came up with specific ideas regarding the changes I make to some of these houses. It is because I can look at every option from every angle with SketchUp. So I have all the plans on paper before beginning demo on a project. It’s a lot more fun than blue prints, and a lot less expensive! I also do a lot of woodworking as a hobby. I use SketchUp to draw every project I build before I even set foot into the shop.

Why do you use SketchUp and what is your favorite thing about it? - Using SketchUp allows me to see all the possibilities of a project before I ever lift a hammer to build (or demo) something. Any mistakes in design ideas, or material estimates can be made on the computer rather than on the project. Ultimately it saves me tons of time and money by eliminating a lot of the mistakes that might have been made “on the job”.

How proficient are you in SketchUp? - I am probably an intermediate. I only use SketchUp Make. I have been learning by trial and error for about the last 15 years or so. And while there are tons of amazing things that I do know how to do, I am sure that there are probably tons and tons of things that I don’t know how to do, but would be glad if I did. Mostly, I just love drawing on it. I have even taught my 8 year old daughter a lot of SketchUp. She uses it to draw her own “dream house.” She loves it even more than playing video games! I rely heavily on the 3D warehouse to furnish the homes in my drawings. So thank you to all who contribute!

Have you gone to a SketchUp 3DBasecamp? No.

What is your current set up? - I use SketchUp Make on my laptop which is my main computer. It’s an HP Envy with a 17" screen and an intel core i7 processor, an Intel HD 4600 graphics card, and 16 GB RAM.
My daughter uses it on my old desktop computer. HP with a quad core processor and an ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 graphics card, and 8 GB RAM. (On this machine, every few minutes the program freezes and the cursor turns to a blue circle and a message appears at the top of the window saying “SketchUp not responding” for several minutes before it “unfreezes” and she can draw again. I would love to know if there is a way to avoid that.)

Do you have a 3D Warehouse page with your models, Extensions, or a website you would like to link to or show off to us? - No. I don’t know how to create a 3D warehouse.

Anything else you would like to tell us? - I have referred several people to SketchUp over the years! It has been an AMAZING tool for me!

What is your favorite Emoji? - :beers:

Do you enjoy long walks on the beach…? - Sure. Who Doesn’t???

I’m a woodworker and am just beginning Sketchup. By just beginning, I mean I’ve spent but a few hours working with it. I’m on a Mack book pro Retina 15 inch, mid 2015 with an 2.8 GHz Intel Core 17. I want to design desks and tables initially.

My name is Dan, I’m a project specialist at an online pipe and fittings distributor.

I use Sketchup personally, but have used it on a professional basis to design pipe and fittings structures.

I use Sketchup mainly because it’s free. I do a lot of DIY projects at home, and I quite enjoy being able to model them for the boss (AKA my wife). I also really enjoy the user interface. It took some getting used to, never having any experience previously with any CAD or 3D modeling software, but it didn’t take long.

I would say I’m an intermediate user. I’m still not venturing too far out into extensions, and I’m sure I’m not using all the tools to my benefit. However, when I use SketchUp at work, we use PipeAlongPath to make builds easier, as well as a number of dynamic fitting components.

My current setup is SketchUp Make 2017 running on a Dell Precision with an i7 and Win10Pro.

Hello my name is Neil. I am retired Safety Engineer. (? more on that latter.) I am 'somewhat familiar with Sketchup. I would like to use Sketchup with my local architect. I have a meeting to discuss what software he uses for his drawings. (more to come on this subject.)

I only use Sketchup ‘personally’.

I consider my self a beginner at this point.

I have NOT used 3D Base camp and plan to learn more about it.

My computer is a Apple MacBook Pro, using Sketchup Make.

I would like to “blend” photography and sketchup. Foreground, and Backgraound = Photo

Hi everyone. Mick Campbell here. I’m an architect who is now an instructor in the Interior Design Department at my local community college here in Charlotte, NC. I have been very heavy into SketchUP for 5+ years now and have been teaching courses in it for more than 3. I even played with it some before it was a part of Google (i know, I’m dating myself).

I’ve been reading the blogs and boards off-on on as long as I have know there was a SketchUp and decided it was long overdue time that I actually officially joined this awesome community. By-the-way, I’m MickC57 on the warehouse and below is my scalie with my best friend Buster the Basset Hound…Warmest regards, Mick

I’m an apprentice in an engineering school, and working in automotive industry.

Where do you use SketchUp? Personally/professionally?
I use it only personally for a lot of different purposes : creation of models of cars (real or my own design), making of parts for 3D printing, architectural rendering

Why do you use SketchUp and what is your favorite thing about it? (Besides using it to impress the babes/bros…)
I started using it when I was 11 or 12, almost 10 years ago, because it’s really an easy software to understand. And I’ve never left it since SketchUp 6, even if I work sometimes on other softs.
