Welcome to our forums! Please introduce yourself :)

Hello, I’m Laura from Firenze (Italy) - I’m currently Product Manager in an IT international company but starting to shift my career after I took an Interior Design Master at the University of Florence - Architecture and Design dept - two years ago.
If everything goes as I planned, I’ll be working as an interior and garden designer soon. That’s where Sketchup comes really handy as a couple of companies I’ve collaborated with use it, and I personally find it so easy and straight to the point compared to other workflows. Also, it is so quick to build a quite useful 3D model to communicate ideas to the client and has an extensive community of users who give support and create components for the warehouse.
I think I am a beginner but with that I was able not only to complete my Master with the maximum of votes and laude, but also to work on my house renovation and clarify plans produced via CAD with 3D models I shared with the other professionals in the project team (rendering some with Vray).

My current setup is SketChup Pro 2022 on an old refurbed Mac. It was crashing a lot in the past, a bit more stable now. I’m thinking about buying a new machine and I stumble into this community to discover why everyone suggest to use PC - even in Sketchup school youtube videos, but then the speaker admit to have a Mac. I’ll follow to discover more.

:star_struck: is my favourite emoji but the one I use more often is

Happy to join! L

Hi I’m Nick, A joiner based not far from London.
Been using Sketchup on and off for about 5 years.
I cant remember who recommended Sketchup to me but I cant imagine using any other program now!
I still class myself as a beginner.
Have only used Sketchup make up until a week ago, now committed to Sketchup pro running on an HP Ryzen 5, 23" hd monitor.
Never attended the basecamp.
I don’t have a Favourite emoji.
I still feel like I’m on a huge learning curve, looking forward to receiving advice from the experts on here!

Hi, i am Arild Eugen from Norway. I am an architect by profession, but industrial designer and graphic designer by practice for 50 years. I am now 78 years old.

I have used SketchUp since I bought my first copy at MacWorld I think it was in 2000, when it was first introduced.

After returning from living 3 years I Kenya as a companion to my wife who worked at the Norwegian Embassy taking care of the Peace Corps, in 1987, I joined a team developing software for architects for the new Macintosh II. I had used Macintosh in Kenya from the beginning but it was like heaven for me to see 6 of the newly introduced Macintosh II lined up in the offices of the Norwegian company Orbit Creative Computing where I started working on the program called Jonathan CAD System.

I was the only architect on the small team and the link to the users. I instructed the developers what architects needed, with feedback from our clients world wide, mostly in Europe. I held courses for architects in Norway and all over Europe. Our program was a competitor to Autocad that I think originated from development in Sweden. We introduced Jonathan in Boston MacWorld in 1988. We managed to get some clients in the US, but most of our clients were in Norway and the rest of Europe.

It was a hard competition with other software from much wealthier companies and we had to stop developing in 1990. Then I was dragged along with my wife and children to go to stay in Tanzania for another 3 years. When I came back from Tanzania I joined a group developing a design program for the Norwegian Railways. I was in charge of visual elements and sign systems and used Jonathan CAD and Adobe Illustrator in addition to manual drawings on a drafting table, to design these elements and the manuals.

Our Jonathan never made it to 3D, although we were talking to French, Hungarian and Japanese developers for the addition of 3D. It never really materialised before we shut down. By the way, the program is still in use for maintenance operation for public buildings since all areas were measurable and could be used in tables of areas of walls, ceilings and floors and outdoor spaces. I think it was the best drafting program ever developed. Alas, I am not able to use it any longer on my newer Macs (Mac Studio M1 Pro).

So my really first experience with 3D was SketchUp. I remember I noticed it passed by the stand, but found it a bit expensive before I saw it in action. I quickly realised that this was a milestone, not to be missed, so I bought it and have used it ever since. I was then living in Bangladesh (yes, with my wife and only the youngest child, out daughter who was 17 and went to the American School in Dhaka).

Even if I «retired» 11 years ago (the retirement age in Norway is 67 years) I am still going. This morning I enjoyed yesterdays Live 3D modeling of the Steam Clock in Vancouver with Tyson. I have the latest (almost) of all gadgets and tools and in addition to designing books and exhibitions, I made 3D printing objects mostly designed in Fusion360, laser burning with my Beamo and making pens, fountain pens, ballpoint pens and pencils on my Shereline lathe. In addition I make leather products, wallets and bags.

I am Toon.

At high school we used autocad. Playing with autocad at home got me towards drawing my room in detail. Autocad was no longer the best type of software. I discovered Sketchup around 2009.
Managed to draw our house, draw a few new houses and some furniture, just for fun.

*Fast forward 15 years of not knowing what to do with my life and struggling with myself and the world

After a heavier depression a few years ago, my only task was to find a life purpose since I had none. Combining all my wishes and needs and capabilities resulted into Pixel Plus. It is my (at the moment unofficial) non-profit organization, and basically all my life revolves around.

In the picture you see part of what I do. The vr glasses are used to setup virtual rides here. You also see a car setup and a beamer. This is to offer those experiences (and the freedom to choose more) to multiple mentally disabled people, at ZonneliedVZW, a care center.

But Pixel Plus stands for more than that. I also adapt hardware and adapt software inputs and such to bring serious gaming within reach of more people. Someone who can only use a joystick parked a truck last week, for example.

Recently I started informing myself for a new project I have in mind. With some far from optimal software, an example was created and the idea is approved and applauded.

A Virtual Reality museum, combining artwork from different departments from ZonneliedVZW. This would not only give the option to showcase more, but also to create a social environment where two artists can meet now.

Sketchup came up while searching on creating 3d environments, and that’s what brings me here. Knowing Sketchup is suited AND familiar it will be the design software for this project.

Next week is the start of a support program I got in to that might go on for two years. That again will most likely lead to another program or to me becoming a student. In the meanwhile, I’ll go on doing what I do for free, without any paperwork and worries.

Who are you? John

What is your industry and profession? Graduate Student

Where do you use SketchUp? Personally/professionally?

Personally. I am interested in extension development, and working on extensions has been a fun way to learn ruby.

Why do you use SketchUp and what is your favorite thing about it?

It is easy to use and can be extended.

How proficient are you in SketchUp? Beginner, intermediate, advanced?

I better be honest about this: Beginner.

Have you gone to a SketchUp 3DBasecamp?

What is your current set up? [Computer type, SketchUp version…etc.]

MacBook Pro (2017) with 2.5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 Processor and Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB.

Running Sketchup Pro 2021 on macOS Big Sur.

Do you have a 3D Warehouse page with your models, Extensions, or a website you would like to link to or show off to us?

No, at least not yet.

Do you enjoy long walks on the beach…?

I’m sure I would, but there isn’t a beach where I am right now, so oh well…

Hello, RD Butler here. Staff and student at The University of Alabama. I work as a broadcast engineer (radio & TV). I am also working towards my degree. I use it at home and at the office on campus. I like being able to work in 3D to get a better vision of what my design will look like.

I am a struggling beginner-ish. I have created several projects just learning by doing. I have not gone to a SketchUp 3DBasecamp.

My setup: I am running SketchUp Pro on an i7 laptop (Windows 10). My favorite Emoji is a Memoji of me giving thumbs up.

I may be a student, but I am 60 years old, so long walks on the beach are not as much fun as they used to be. I have been told to take a long walk off a short pier once.

I like to be called Bob.

Hello. I’m J.D. Ray, a business analyst by profession and a designer of things by hobby. I’ve been using SketchUp on and off for about fifteen years, but there have been large gaps in my usage, so my skills are still fairly low.

I love that SketchUp is so accessible to people who don’t have a background in architecture, engineering, computer graphics, or whatever else. I have a technical background, so one would think that I would adapt to 3D modeling easily, but it hasn’t been the case… except for using SketchUp.

I’m currently without a personal computer, so am using the web version on my work laptop, hoping that Santa brings me a new computer (which will be a Mac) this year. My latest project is a small (3 m long) aluminum boat with an inboard electric motor, which I’m struggling with due to the complex curves in the bow area.

I’ve published a few models to the 3DWarehouse over the years. I think you can find them at this link: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/manage/user/1425478675712424022443498?nav=models#

My goal for the boat design is to create a design pattern that’s scalable from three to six meters for a boat that’s simple and easy to maintain.

My wife and I live in Oak Harbor, WA, USA, and walks on the beach are one of my favorite things so long as she’s with me. And my favorite emoji has to be :man_shrugging:

My name is Clyde. Use Sketchup for drawings of Court Game Layouts

I am Clyde. Use Sketchup for Sport Game Layout drawings

Who are you? I’m Liam.

What is your industry and profession? I am currently an interior design student who hopes to continue into the interior design field.

Where do you use SketchUp? I use it personally at my home for school projects or personal projects.

Why do you use SketchUp and what is your favorite thing about it? I love how simple yet complex SketchUp is, just complex enough to intrigue me but simple enough to where I don’t get annoyed.

How proficient are you in SketchUp? I am intermediate level when it comes to SketchUp, I’d like to think I am more proficient than I am but I know I’d be lying.

Have you gone to a SketchUp 3DBasecamp? No

What is your current set up? I currently have a custom built computer with a RTX 3080 FE graphics card. I am using SketchUp Pro 2022 version on Windows 10.

Do you have a 3D Warehouse page with your models, Extensions, or a website you would like to link to or show off to us? Behance

Anything else you would like to tell us? Unfortunately, I haven’t seen a UFO so I don’t have much else to say.

What is your favorite Emoji? My favorite Emoji is : :pirate_flag:

Do you enjoy long walks on the beach…? I love walking the beach with my dog!

I am Alex. Use Sketchup for freelance work

I am back from a long hiatus from sketchup but glad to be back
I use my chin to do all my drawings, . mainly drawing hoses hoping to get right into the rendering side of things… instead of house design like I was doing before

thank you

Hi, I’m Kieron. I’m a civil engineer (mainly water, and particularly stormwater now) and I’ve just headed out on my own after 25yrs in big consultancy. It’s scary!

I use Sketchup for designing, visualising and specifying in both my paid work and, when I can spare the time, DIY projects.

I’d say I’m an intermediate user. I haven’t been to a Basecamp. I don’t have a warehouse but I know roughly what it is and how it works.

I’m keen to learn much more about 3D scan processing, sandboxing, and generally representing the natural world well enough with minimum data. I’m on Mac OSX, and I’ve just bought an iPad with a LiDAR scanner. I have high hopes for it…!?

I enjoy walks, riding bikes, and several other gravity adjacent pursuits. I think sure, we need cars, but not THAT much

Hi I’m Mary Scanlan /Diamantina Design
I love Sketchup
I use it for Interior Design & Landscape Design
The only downfall seems to be ‘importing a land survey’ for a landscape design for council development application. I can import a DWG file but the text (spot levels) don’t come in. Showing the spot levels is a requirement for council plans.
Any solution to this ? (it needs to be a vector file)
Many thanks

Heyyo I’m Keelan
I use SU for carpentry and as of recently 3D printing.
Up until now I’ve gotten away with just sticking to simple designs, basically straight lines and common angles. 3D modeling is starting to expand my need for a powerful design tool and look forward to learning more of what it can do!

I’ve looked at SketchUp before but stumbled onto April Wilkerson’s 2 part intro videos. Hope reborn!

Retired pastor, wife, 2 sons & daughters-in-law, 6 g’children.
Been learning woodworking the past almost 10 years.

Am struggling, even with April’s vids.

Thus, I am HERE.

Bless y’all!
